Travis AFB, as you read, is in Fairfield. Location is great. You are within hours of the Sierra Nevada Mountains (Tahoe, etc.), San Fransisco, Monterey, Santa Cruz, Bodega Bay on the No. coast, Reno. I live in Oakley and it's a 45-55 minute trip there for me. The Commissary was rebuilt in the last ten years and is huge with Deli and Bakery. The enlarged the exchange from one building to two and each has it's own mini-mall setup with: uniform store, bakery, postal annex, pharmacy, adult beverage package store and other small stores and kiosks.
It's an easy place to get around, has an air force museum, bowling alley, banks, services for enlisteds and retirees. They have been upgrading the housing and just remodeled the whole entry system for maximum security.
I've been going there since the late 70's and it is nice to have it so close and not closed as with so many bases here in Calif. It is a major hub for planes. The fairly new David Grant Hospital is supposedly a major No. Calif Cancer center, too. Not sure of the exact hours of this facilty. I use civilian services thru my own hospital I work at.
Hope this helps. I move to SW Montana late 2007...will surely miss Travis. I will be 4.5 hrs from the nearest facility in Great Falls

PS...you're right...Edwards AFB is
way too far out in the desert boonies. I pass there whenever I visit my Bro. in Vegas (travel 5 to 58 to 15)...takes me 7 1/2 hrs
