I haven't been everywhere in CA, but these are some of my favorites:
-Carmel- really nice area on the Monterey Peninsula.
-Santa Rosa- north of San Francisco
-Grass Valley- nice community in the foothill northeast of Sacramento
-Placerville- south of Grass Valley
-Rancho Santa Fe- north of San Diego- great schools. CEO's, professional athletes, and old movie stars for neighbors.
-Palm Springs area- nice for a winter place. Kinda hot during summer months.
-Any house close to the beach from San Diego to Carlsbad.
These are just a few of the areas I would consider if I won the lottery and did not have to work. There are actually a lot of nice areas in CA, just depends on your means and needs. We used to live in San Marcos. There were areas in SM I would not live in because of crime, crummy houses, lack of views, etc. We were in a great older neighborhood with views and friendly neighbors. We moved to CO and it's the same here. There are places I would not want to reside in. We found a place that we like and afford. Is there places I would rather live? Vail looks nice and I love to snowboard. But due to financial shortcomings, we had to settle
Maybe you could elaborate on things you are looking for and how much you want to spend. For instance> my daughter's piano teacher sold her house in Carlsbad and bought a mobile home in the Newport Marina. It cost her close to a million dollars. It's pretty nice with a private dock. She thought Carlsbad was lacking in culture and she's used to high society types.
Good Luck with your search

Ranco Santa Fe is the best. It's safe (you can get a walled and gated compound for your family), the schools can't be better, it's quiet and lush yet 10 minutes from the beach.

Plus, you get San Diego weather. I don't see where it falls short.

My vote goes to Alta Loma. It's a small city nestled in the foothills, about 30 miles East of LA. It's safe, beautiful, has great schools (even a large community college), and friendly people.

I would have to say there are a lot of large and small towns that are a good, and safe to live in.

If you are considering moving here, what type of climate are you looking for, we have areas with only two seasons and others with four.

Are you looking to relocate to a larger city? Or a smaller town. Or a small town near a big city like Roseville and Rocklin, both of which I have always wanted to live there but found it a bit costly. Or even if you wanted to move a little east further and start getting into the foothills, Auburn and Placerville are nice. I am more familiar with northern California then with southern California. Chico and Redding are both nice cities. I have heard that Santa Rosa is a very good place to live, and within an hours drive of the ocean.

I wish you the best of luck finding that special place.
