Default Seek and Ye Shall Find

One more thing GBG, I went back and read your post again. I see that you may have been implying that if I were Jewish, the Anti-semitism I could have received after moving to SLO could possibly be the reason I don't like living here.

Well, that's like asking a completely white skinned woman who's father and whole family is dark-skinned African American if she is encountering any racism in her new neighborhood.

I don't look "ethnic." As a result, I've heard some really bold pejorative remarks about Jews said right in front of me throughout my life. I've also been assumed to be Christian and I am not.

It's put me in very uncomfortable positions more than once.

Being more of an agnostic than anything else, I do not tend to seek out the Anti's, because of fear, or apprehension, and I am not looking for it, asking for it, expecting it.

I have lived in a lot of places and I have heard the worst racial slurs against all humankind. Maybe you have, too. But I'd have to say that in SLO I have never encountered it. The local people here seem simple, and parochial and insular. The worst I could say about them is that they may be a bit naive in thinking everyone else is Christian and that everyone in America goes to church every Sunday (don't they?), that Christmas and Easter are not religious holidays (they are American traditions....I still don't get that one), and that everyone is just like them....and if they aren't, well, they are a little "alien."

I never felt any threat here. I never felt any mistreatment here, and neither have any of my Jewish friends...and I do have a few here, and they do look more ethnic and have more ethnic sounding names than I.

So, in conclusion, people like me (who look Christian, but aren't) are not the right people to be asking about anti-semitism in the community. And anti-semitic treatment toward me is most certainly not the reason I don't like living in the region.

I am a WASP originally from suburban Detroit, who has been using the term "tush" all of my life.
BTW-We live in Brooklyn and my sister lives in LA. She keeps bugging us to move. My wife hates the traffic in LA, but loves Santa Barbara (said she would move in a heartbeat). I just don't know if I would like it (besides the weather).
What do you think?

Default Pick one: L.A., Santa Barbara, Detroit

Well, I guess home is where the heart is. I'd like to see who picks what and why.

But anyway........L.A. isn't so bad if you like city living. You just need to know your neighborhoods, have a decent amount of money and independence in your work so you can pick and choose your traffic strategy, and you need to spend some time there to check it out. It's a real city now.... No more "Surf City USA " like it was 25+ years ago.

It's plugged in for the Millenium. Everything you'd ever dream of you'll see there. Some people who live in L.A. may never even go to the incredible venues of entertainment, shopping, and cultural events available to them, but they like knowing these things are available ....just in case.

Regarding the small charming town kind of places out here in California:

A lot of people dream that these places will be heavenly and when they move there, they may find it is only heavenly when they were just passing through back then on vacation.

I think If you are making a lateral move to California -e.g., city to city, or small town to small town,.........you are more likely to hit a bullseye without a trial run first.

Regarding Santa Barbara:

It is beautiful, and small town in feeling, and upscale wealth is all around, as well as old money, and it shows. The place is gorgeous.

It's First class. There is community pride about aesthetics and integrity in art and architecture and keeping things clean and pristine. They even have yearly awards for it, given to both businesses and private sector alike.

If you've travelled up and down to other coastal towns of California, you'll know that this is not always the case, if that at all interests you.

Women and country-club-type men like Santa Barbara. It's really our little Monaco. There are endless things to do if you have some money and you like leisure class activities, like golf, horses, nature hikes and nature clubs, dining, wineries, and shopping.

And it does entertain the jet set, as well as middle class tourists in the summer. Summer holiday weekends anywhere in popular California coastal towns is hell, including L.A., San Diego, Newport Bch, and up north, too.

If you live near the beach, you'll find yourself stocking up on groceries to spend the holidays at home....and you'll go to the beach or on vacation during the week, or on non-holidays, preferably in the fall or winter.

The rest of the year, besides summer, SB is sleepy. I go there about every 3 weeks and nothing is ever crowded once the kids go back to school in the fall. Even the weekends are very mild all winter, with some visitors on weekend getaways from L.A.

The best thing about Santa Barbara is that it has not only a small town feeling, but it has anything and everything there -or close by- that one would want or need in every price range and for every taste. It is one resourceful little place. I consider it a "Pinch Me" to live there.

Just be careful when you read all this stuff on here. Especially when you see extreme judgments. When someone says "everyone" loves such and such, or they can't imagine anyone not "absolutely loving" such and such, I'd beware.

There is no such thing as a place "everyone and anyone" loves.

Chemistry happens in towns and cities, too, not just with people.

You have to read between the lines on this forum.....and keep reading to get the scoop and opinions from a lot of different types of people until something/someone/someplace resonates with you.

If you really want to know about living somewhere, your best bet is to rent a place there for a summer, or a winter or something. I, personally, would never, ever move again to a place unknown without doing that first.

Good luck.

If money is not an option I would pick Santa barbara because the area is very luxurious but doesnt have the southern ca. feel.

Default Living in La Jolla

I've never been to Santa Barbara but I live in La Jolla Shores and though it's very nice it's also extremely congested, especially in the summer. There is also alot of construction going on;old houses being torn down and new ones being built up.

Good luck!

Red face La Jolla vs. Santa Barbara

Santa Barbara reminds me of San Diego/La Jolla 30-40 years ago. I would pick Santa Barbara over La Jolla, and I live in La Jolla! (fewer people and less traffic). La Jolla has benefits close to a major airport and jobs. Either one of them is pretty close to paradise.

Default Santa Barbara is like a beautiful supermodel...

We lived in Carpinteria for three years and loved it except the traffic was getting worse and of course, the cost of living was high (isn't it almost anywhere in CA, though) Santa Barbara is like the supermodel, only for the privileged, select few to enjoy. The rest just struggle to survive and have no time to enjoy where they live. I have no personal experience with So Cal since moving north to Los Osos (slower paced, cool unspoiled beaches, love San Luis Obispo, less traffic) Guess your job will best help you decide. I go down to Santa Barbara occasionally to really enjoy it like a tourist and then come home to reality!

Unfortunately the supermodel presently has herpes or maybe something more like syphilis (which could leave permanent damage or even death). I am refering to the cities growing and more violent gang problem that is no longer contained in the 'bad areas', but is active in the most populated and activity oriented part of the city that the 'select few' are supposed to be enjoying.

Unfortunately the select few would rather not be feeling unsafe by the possiblity of knives, guns, drug running, turf wars, assaulted by the flashing of gang signs, graffiti, and the threat of possible rape or gang beatings if one is out for a late dinner walking to their car or up for an early morning jog. No. La Jolla next to the water is a safe place and one can get lost without wondering if they should be packin' a Glock and backpack or Hermes bag full of pepper spray. Sure there is traffic as a drawback, but tell me, which would you prefer? Fear of gang members with weapons and a need to prove themselves by hurting others and turfing your street and fighting over the boundaries or traffic jams? Besides one can get out and walk by the ocean in La Jolla and have everything they need pretty much with all the restaurants, shopping, golf courses, university etc and if one has money, buy a house nearby and rarely have to even cross the freeway or go on it.
