Where it is less crowded. California is so crowded you can't evern get a campsite in the summer unless you make plans 6 or 7 months ahead of time.

That is because it is beautiful. Of course the most beautiful places will also be the most crowded.

That is truly unfortunate. I think some better places to raise kids might be New Mexico, or maybe Utah. But it is soooooo crowded here that it is just crazy. I grew up in San Diego, and even there it is not what it used to be.

Not every area of California is crowded. Perhaps your experience is a result of where you've been. There are a lot of uncrowded spots in CA. I've seen them!

Great question. I left the state to raise my two older kids. I have one more to raise and if I move back to SoCal she will probably go to private school.

Median price (according to zillow.com)
Santa Ynez: $1.7 million
Buellton: $550,000
Solvang: $1.5 million
Los Olivos: $1.5 million.
