It is a nice town. See this link. CCI is probably the least intrusive of any state prison anywhere, and to my knowledge has never been a community problem. Check it out on Google Earth. There have been some homes built out that way in Bear Valley Springs, etc. but I only mentioned it because it's there.
Actually, Kern County hosts almost a dozen prisons, I think, and that mostly means its a great bedroom community resource for department of corrections employees and staff. To my mind that's mostly a plus. It's like having three RCMP members living on your block. Adds to the overall safety of the neighborhood. Imo.

If you were making between 22-24 dollars an hour, would that be considered a good paying Job in California? Generally what areas would be best for that type of income.
I am asking because it is very expensive to live in Canada. $22-24 an hour would not be very good in Canada Ontario. The places that have been mentioned would it be affordable to live there with that icome on 40 hours a week?

In the Bakersfield area/Kern County, yes, 22-24 per hour would be good pay. That pay would go pretty far in most parts of the CA central valley, with the exception of the nicest parts of the larger valley cities.

Bear Valley Springs is a gated, rather exclusive community. They have horse stables, golf course and all that, plus the houses are on a bit of acreage. They also have very strict rules that many do not like.
In town you could find a nice place in the $150k-$250k range.
Property Details for 468 Pepper Dr., Tehachapi, CA, 93561
These are brand new, KB Home Community - Orchard Glen @ Tehachapi - Tehachapi, CA
There are 5 that are selling for under $250k

Yes, Bear Valley Springs is one example. But for in-town housing, that salary would be good. The other poster had some good examples (although I might avoid KB homes as I hear they have quality problems).

I really appreciate your answers. Here in Canada 32 dollars an hour is just slightly middleclass living. It seems there is a big difference in cost of living. I am assumming 22 -24 dollars an hour is middle class.
Bear valley springs you said have rules. What do you mean by that. Bakersfield To me would seem like such a huge city that is why I am looking at areas around which I believe you call the valleys.
22-24 dollars an hour with 4 children under age 7, would be a comfortable living, aswell as them going to christian or private schools?
I am asking alot of questions I know but reading on the net really does not help the way personal advice does if you know what I mean.
Would Golden Hills be Too pricy to live in? Am I just looking in the wrong spots. IS green Acres a good place? Is that in the Valley aswell. It is a bit confusing for me.

You're taking into account the difference between the Canadian dollar and the US dollar, right? Doing the conversions?
22-24 per hour works out to about $45,000 per year, before taxes. If you're needing money for private tuition for 4 kids, then, no, that might not be enough. It's so hard to say. Much will depend on housing costs, since that's the biggest expense. Private school tuition can vary widely from school to school.
If Bakersfield is a huge city to you, then I guess you'd be comfortable in the little towns around Arvin. Bakersfield doesn't FEEL like a huge city to me, but perhaps that's all in one's perspective.
Will you have a chance to visit? What about living in Arvin itself?
When I say valley, I mean the San Joaquin Valley, in this case, which is the lower valley area including Bakersfield and the surrounding cities. Tehachapi and Bear Valley Springs are in the mountains and therefore not in the "valley."

Oh I see
See I would have never known the difference between valley and mountains considering in ontario we have neither. Its just FLAT. So I am asumming living in the mountains is a higher cost factor than in the valley and city. Yes I am very unfamilliar of the USA. IF he gets the job they are flying us out.
Is Mould MAking in High demand in these areas. Also know as Tool Makers ect... A poster asked about moving from canada to arvin as if that would be highly strange and unheard of to do.
45,000 in usa from what i can tell by the posts is a good living. Where I am comparing 65 000 where I live now is just making it. This is why I am a little confused at the cost of living.
