Default Kern, Johnsondale, Sequoia Camping?

Anyone grow up doing this? I'm only 26 now, but since I was a baby my dad has always taken me camping up there(and Yosemite) once or twice a year since we are about 3.5 hours away.
We go to what family had always called "Dry Meadows" because of the supposed Dry Meadow Creek that flowed through the sites.
These are all free camping sites and there are no facilities of any kind.
It's just north or Johnsondale on Upper Peppermint and campground 4 I believe. It's about one exit past the Camp Whitsett boy scout camp.

We plan to go soon, after a one decade hiatus.

I love it up there, i was just up there yesterday motorcycle riding, there sure are alot of places to camp, camp 4 is a good one and upper and lower peppermint creek, it's a little warm in the day time right now but cold at night.

I started taking my son camping when he was less than a week old LOL, we are heading up to fraisher mill at the end of the month.

Have a good time.

My dads cousin said it burned up there recently, well years ago...but its aftermath is still visible.
I hope it will be a good time. I was going to go Labor Day weekend, but now I plan to go on the 22nd.

Yep, Camp Whitsett. I was in BSA Troop 175 at St. Bernardines in Woodland Hills, around 1973. That's where the summer camps were. I didn't go to Whitsitt but instead to Camp Emerald Bay on Catalina.

http://www.whitsett.org/

Used to go up to those camping areas (the weren't formal campgrounds, just old jeep trails in the forest) the weekend after Memorial Day (Memorial Day was typically a zoo). Used to camp off of Western Divide Highway (I think it was called Aspen Meadows??) which is a turn north off of Mountain Road 50 up from Johnsondale. Even in summer it was cool up there. Would see bears. Lots of lush meadows up there. During the day we'd drive down to the Kern River and fish, hike, and raft or sometimes rent a boat on Isabella. Great times...probably around 1988-1990. A nice drive is further north from where we camped to Dome Rock.

This is exactly what it looked like where we camped (image not protected by copyright):

Also we'd head even further north for some fun rock slides on the Tule River:

Awesome...we only see meadows like that if we hiked...might have to check that area out.

I did go on memorial weekend this year, but I was real sick...forced myself and my sick g/f to go because I had planned it and everything. We were in the tent all day because we were drained...and it was raining....boo

BUt there were SOOO many RVs, buses, a wedding!!! I dont remember seeing so many people there.

Whoa Charles, I looked into the CR-107 on yahoo maps...is it close to Mountain Rd-50 or waaay up near hwy-190/quaker meadow? There is a Quaken Aspen up above the Q.M...is that perhaps the Aspen Meadows you recall?

I see a huuuge Tule River Indian Reservation...but am clueless as to where the slides are.

It is 6.6 miles west of Johnsondale.

from: western divide highway and mountain road 50 to: johnsondale, ca - Google Maps

The slides are near Camp Wishon and Highway 190 east of Springville.
