My favorite is the Double Double Protien Style with grilled onions and pickles. The frys are good, but they are natural and not coated with other junk like the other chains. In' N Out is also pretty reasonalble and attests to why they are doing very well. They keep their menu simple and provide good quality food for a cheap price = very busy restaurants.

Possibly because they are a family owned business and quite selective of their staff and management. They can only train so many managers at a time and I hear they pay them really well [for that industry]. They also pick and choose their locations with care.
Too, they are a "life-style based" food provider and probably don't see the sales volume potential in other areas they presently enjoy in the west and southwest. Additionally, from what I've been told, the business has been established following strong religious and ethical guidelines [confirm with Bible verse citations on the base of their cups] and the owners probably don't feel a compelling need to become wealthier by spending more time away from their homes and families. Those would be my guesses.

To add to what Franklyn said, In-N-Out typically only likes to ship pre-cooked food to areas within a days drive from the companie's distribution center (its the reason why the lettuce, tomatoes, onions and even the fries taste fresh), hence the reason you only see INO in California, parts of Nevada, Arizona and far western Utah.
However, with the matriarch having died off a couple years back and the heir of the company being a spoiled 26 year old granddaughter, the board of directors are nervous since the granddaughter has made it clear she wants the company to go nationwide. Quality and service be damned, I guess.

Animal Fries. It is the BEST drunk food ever. EVER. Whenever we're at home, drinking some beer, watchin a movie or whatnot, we always grab the sober person to run down and get a whole bunch of animal fries. Absolutely amazing.

I was 12 years old and my family was very anti fast food at the time but for some reason In N Out had sparked my Mothers curiosity. I was not born in California but I was very young when my family decided to move to San Diego. The hiuge Drive Thru lines and crowd inside intimidated my parents but "Hey" we were there and I surely didnt want to miss out on a burger.
It turned out to be one of the greatest days of my childhood! to say the least. The Burgers are just THAT good.
Today, I live alone in the city of Los Angeles and every few days after work I stop by at any In N Out in the city and watch numerous people from other States and countries try them for the first time.

The ORIGINAL, Baldwin Park, CA 1977 was my first. Grandparents lived there at the time--before it became ghetto-- and naturally took me there. The burgers used to be bigger and better.
