Can't remember the first time I had an In N' Out burger. But having grown up here, I think I have probably had burgers from damn near every popular place in Southern California. McDonalds was okay when I was a little kid but I lost my taste for them by the time I was in my teens. Hated Jack in the Box, never cared for Burger King, found Carl's Jr. so-so, but I did like the burgers from Bob's Big Boy. And I have to say that burgers from Fatburger I found to be the most consistently good and ones that I liked most.
People always raved that "Oh you haven't had a real burger until you have one from Tommy's or In N' Out". Well, I tried a Tommy's burger a few times. Didn't think they were as great as everyone said. Same thing for In N' Out. Every INO burger I got was the same; cheese slapped on and barely melted, bun on the stale side, and the meat dried out and pretty tasteless. Didn't get why people loved them so much then and still don't get it now.
So yeah, if I was really jonesing for a burger and had a choice between Fatburger and In N' Out, I'd go with Fatburger every time. If it was In N' Out or nothing, sorry to say I would go with nothing.

You'll probably love Whataburger, then. They're all over the Desert Southwest and Texas. I rate them a B- then to INO's A, though.

Don't know about Whattaburger
I moved from CA to TX...I have tried Whattaburger a few times and I would say that only once did it actually live up to the satisfaction of any INO burger I ever had. My misfortune is my kids like McD so when we are in that fast food mode, we typically end up at McD. Our actual preference over WB and McD down here is Sonic. Heck, I even eat Carl's, which I never did in CA.

I live in TN and I went to California the past 2 summers to visit family. The first time I had an In-N-Out burger was the summer of 2007 when we took a trip to San Francisco. The restaurant was packed and the seats were full. Luckily when we finally got our food, we managed to find 3 open seats together. Oh my goodness that burger was delicious!! I didn't really like the fries, but the burger was worth it. Too bad we don't have them out here!

About a year ago. Once we hit the California state line (from AZ) we stopped at Del Taco. Then the next day, once in LA, we ate our first In & Out Burger!!!! It was even better than expected.
However, back in December I went to Santa Barbara and tried a place called Habit Burger and I have to say they are very close in the dance of the taste buds contest!

I was 12 years old and my family was very anti fast food at the time but for some reason In N Out had sparked my Mothers curiosity. I was not born in California but I was very young when my family decided to move to San Diego. The hiuge Drive Thru lines and crowd inside intimidated my parents but "Hey" we were there and I surely didnt want to miss out on a burger.
It turned out to be one of the greatest days of my childhood! to say the least. The Burgers are just THAT good.
Today, I live alone in the city of Los Angeles and every few days after work I stop by at any In N Out in the city and watch numerous people from other States and countries try them for the first time.

Growing up in CA and loving In N Out I can honestly say that it is one of the few things I miss about CA since moving to TX a little over a year ago. My favorite is a #2 grilled onions, fries animal style and a root beer.
We have Whataburger out here but it is not quite the same. In N Out would do quite well in TX.

My first was a Double-Double at the In-N-Out off Ramon Road/10 Freeway in Thousand Palms driving back to Phoenix from LA about ten years ago. INO opened four or five restaurants in Phoenix about two years later and I'd stop at the Dysart Road location on the west end of Phoenix to bring a pack of Double-Doubles back to our house on the east side of Phoenix. Fortunately, INO opened a restaraunt about five minutes from my house a couple months later.
Just had animal-style fries for the first time last Tuesday...a little too much what with the special sauce, cheese and fries. If I want an excessively unhealthy and sloppy meal, I'll stick with Tommy's

I just had my first one last year. Nothing special about it, really. I don't see the big deal about IN-N-Out.
