Pollution: Long Beach beaches. Are they swimmable?
I am relocating to Long Beach. I've been to Google maps and Google Earth. Just one problem. Although Google shows street views that are awesome, I never see any people on the beaches.
So, how are the beaches? Is there much pollution and at what ends, in what areas? I know people who say they went to Seal Beach frequently. Is above Seal Beach considered less clean?
I am moving to LB after having given Monterey and Santa Barbara a close look. Why? Affordability and close access to the water. Maybe when I get there I will look around and relocate, but for now I would love to hear about what others think of the LB area and it's beach areas.

people swim alamitos bay, but typically long beach beaches are pretty bleh because of the views(lots of commercial traffic and boating traffic) and the breakwater means no waves.

There are problems that the jetties created: no waves\ stale water\ pollution due to oil rigs. When I was a kid we swam in Seal Beach.

Lompoc isn't exactly beach front, but it is close to the ocean. Real estate in Lompoc is a bargain right now.

Belmont Shore is a totally usable beach with a pier and a nice little stretch of shops, cafes and restaurants. It's on the southeastern corner of Long Beach.
Yes, our ginormous harbor pollutes much of the beach in LB and the towering industry of San Pedro Harbor isn't pretty (some people think it is).

Yesterday there was a 5,000 gallon sewage spill in the LA river and all of Long Beach beaches are closed for now. There is talk of removing a long breakwater in the Long Beach harbor. Originally installed when this was a Navy town but not really necessary any more. If this is removed natural ocean currents would make Long Beach much cleaner.

The Beaches may not be the safest to swim but atleast the coolest Cafe in the world is there!! And Go Red Sox... even if you don't have an utter obsession, my Mother would still be proud. I would have to say the water didn't tantalize me much when I visited the Sandy space yesterday. Have a wet suit? That's the answer.... hey you can get your top section wet at home.
