This is what I don't understand ... was California somehow conservative in the '60s and '70s? Obviously not.

I think conservatives are better off if they leave since they are so miserable here but, what I've never understood is how or why they ever expected California to be a conservative state when, obviously, that was never gonna happen.

California has always been a liberal state. Did they not already know this?

You may have a point if you are talking the north but Southern California has been conservative for most of the 53 years I lived there. There has always been a divide between north and south politically speaking.

Where I lived in Orange County was still conservative and very family friendly. I did not leave for political reasons, I left for financial gain/security and less crowded conditions.

BTW I came out of the Hippie age and thank God still ended up being conservative/moderate.

OC used to be a lot more conservative than it is now but this isn't the same OC it was in 1980, demographically. Now its mostly just south OC and parts of SD that are solidly conservative. Conservatives migrated from LA to OC to south OC to another state as CA has changed.

CA central coast has a spectacular aura aboutCA central coast has a spectacular aura aboutCA central coast has a spectacular aura aboutCA central coast has a spectacular aura about
I can't say I know a ton of people who have left CA. But the people I do know who have left and are thinking about leaving, are ALL conservative minded. And not necessarily Rebublican, but people who are passionate about personal freedoms and the 2nd Admendment. Are they all conservative leaning who leave? probably not. Is the majority conservative? who knows, I don't. The majority of reasons for leaving stated to me have been because of the perceived draconian laws/nanny state attitude of CA. More so than the affordability. But the affordability does play a part, because they know that they can sell their house here and pay for one with cash and own it outright in another state. From my experience the people who move from an area of CA because real estate is too expensive, move to another area of CA where they can afford a home. Not many people I know of are leaving so they can live the "American Dream", owning their own home. I haven't seen that. But I honestly haven't met enough people leaving to know how accurate as a whole my perception is.

I think we should take a poll on this. This might be interesting.

I know for my husband and I, we didn't move out of CA because of political reasons but I'm sure there are some that did.

We aren't moving back to CA because of political reasons either.

Norma Jeanne is on a distinguished road
This is an interesting idea, though I love CA & would never leave. Have lived here my whole life in many different areas around CA.

My former husband's family was a real life "Grapes of Wrath" story. Came here in 1937 with nothing & died quite weathly 60+ yrs later.

My parents came from the mid-west before WWII. My siblings & I were all born here and all remain here + all their children and family too.

We stay above the fray, away from crime ridden areas and liberals! We are all conservative Republicans. CA has its problems, but the good far out-weighs the bad.

The people I know who have left CA either left because they were originally from somewhere else or left for job related reasons, transferred out. I have known many people who had to leave and couldn't wait to get back. I personally have visited many other places, some are quite nice, but I like it here.

This probably doesn't help with your book, but just thought I'd let you know that there are still a few of us "old originals" here in CA who don't want to leave.

Though I would be interested in reading your book if and when you get it published.

Norma Jeanne
