One of the best examples is the now 92 foot tall redwood located on Huntington Boulevard in Fresno in front of the old A.G. Wishon house.

It was first decorated with electric Christmas lights in 1918 by the founder of the San Joaquin Light and Power Co. to show how electric lights could be used. Every year it is still decorated with electric lights as part of "Candlelight Christmas".

It is now one of the longest decorated living outdoor Christmas trees in the US.

"spiritually" speaking...

meaning that if residents were forced to vote and to identify themselves as "Southern or Northern" californians....

I say in the central valley, the split is just south of Fresno....Fresno being "north";

and in the central coast, somewhere between Salinas and Paso Robles, the former northern cal, the latter southern cal oriented.

That's actually pretty close to how it breaks down. The northern Salinas Valley\ Salinas watches TV stations from San Francisco & read the San Francisco Chronicle. The southern Salinas Valley\ Paso Robles have cable stations from Los Angeles & read the LA Times.

The San Joaquin Valley's breakdown is similar but I think they watch LA stations in Fresno so maybe further north like Modesto would be more northern California. Bakersfield is definitely Southern California though most Californians probably consider everything north of the Tehachapi Mts\Point Conception as Northern California even though a split half & half would be just south of San Jose & north of Modesto.

I can't even get the LA or SF stations over the air, only the Fresno stations.

For what it is worth, here in Fresno the local radio/TV stations broadcast the SF Giants, Oakland A's, and also the LA Dodgers. So we may be the dividing line in the eyes of the sports teams.

In Fresno, people watch Fresno stations.

Fresno is, if pressed, Northern California.

No, the center point is near North Fork, CA (in line with Madera, CA roughly), so this would be too far north.

Talking Perspectives...

It all depends on your vantage point. In Bakersfield they cite the Tehachapi's. In Red Bluff, we say Orland.

Back off SoCal.

Fresno is ours.
