The actual center of the state is North Fork, but if you where driving on 99 I would say when you got to Madera would be very close to the center of the state, but when they always talked about splitting the state, they almost always use Bakersfield as where they would split the state.

There's actually a spot on Highway 99 near Madera where there are a palm tree and a redwood tree planted right next to each other in the median (the redwood is north of the palm). Right between these 2 trees is the midline for the state (drawn straight west from the North Fork center point).

I know Huell Howser showed the trees on his TV show California's Gold, so there is video out there showing the trees.

Santa Maria\ Bakersfield then for some reason it seems to go north to Death Valley even though the north Mojave Desert is at the same latitude as Salinas.

I agree with the Madera/North Fork answer, but when people refer to Southern California, I figure they mean south of the grapevine. when people say northern California, I figure they mean more or less Sacramento north. It has become a pet peeve of mine for people to lump all of central California together because there are so many differences between the central coast and the central valley. It depends on what you are talking about, and what kind of info you are looking for. If you are asking questions on this forum, it is best to be more specific, like "Bay Area" "Central Valley" "Central Coast", etc.
Those trees are in the center divide on Hwy 99 at Avenue 10 south of Madera.

One of the original trees, I believe it was the redwood, collapsed a few years ago. A replacement tree was planted in the same spot.

Yes, they do, if they're taken care of properly. Many people have them in their yards and you'll see them in parks, too.
