Where is your family from ? What do you and your husband do for work ? Do you prefer the foothills, coast, valley ? The cost of living in Northern Ca is still relatively high and wages have not quite caught up in my opinion but that could change within the year. With that said Northern Ca has a lot of places that are small towns, but it depends on what you and your spouse do for work because smaller towns have fewer prospects.

Northern CA is big. Can you narrow it down a bit? Where are your relatives you are trying to be close to, and how close do you want to be?

Try and google Humboldt Bay region of Humboldt county. Eureka is the largest town at 28,000 and Arcata and McKinleyville follow at somewhere around 17,000. Arcata has a lot of rural areas and McKinleyville is unincorporated. Arcata and McKinleyville are part of the Northern Humboldt school district and it is a very good school district. Crime is very low here in McKinleyville. McK is 90 miles south of the Oregon border, 143 miles west of Redding Ca and 300 miles north of San Francisco. It takes about 5 and a half hours to get to S F or from there to here, very little traffic on highway 101 once you get past the Santa Rosa area heading north.

I live in Chico CA, from smaller rural town. CHico is good for schools and college. Shopping is okay, better than some of the smaller town around this area. You should check it out. It has a big beautiful park here, that I love to death. Close to driving to the bay area, close to sacramento which has the air port that most ppl use, and other shopping.

Yolo County might be a good place to check out; there are a lot of smaller, rural farm towns. http://www.city-data.com/county/Yolo_County-CA.html
