Default Modesto is nice

For those considering moving to Modesto--it's ok. I was hesitant after reading all the threads about it before I moved here. I have to say it's nice, always sunny , hot but not humid, people are super friendly...and easy access to San Fran, Sac, Yosemite, Sequoia...I'm happy here.

Nice to know you're happy. Modesto is ok. It's main problem is it's oddly shaped and there's nothing special to do there. The people overall could be better, too. It is practically Stockton's brother; not that good and not that bad. Most people wouldn't live in Modesto though if they had the choice to move somewhere else.

As a Modesto native who moved out and lived in Los Angeles, Boston, New York and the Bay Area, it isn't a bad town anymore. It has decent amenities and it is trying very hard to become a better place to live. The problem with Stanislaus County is the lack of a diverse economy which makes it perpetually poor even in good times. In the 1960s/1970s when lots of companies wanted to set up shop here, the people in power were afraid to let them in. The sad part is that now, there is an Stanisalus County Business Development office in the Silicon Valley to try to attract companies to open up branches in the area. It's too bad that these large companies have a long memory and they haven't warmed up to the idea of coming to Modesto. Even now, it is difficult for a large company to open up a business in Modesto. The people in power are still afraid.

On a positive note, if you like homes, there are a lot of neat homes for a town of its' size. There is a wide variety of architecture styles, even in one neighborhood. The College/Enslen area (South of Orangeburg, West of McHenry, East of Tully) is great but expensive. Sherwood Forest (around Robin Hood Drive) and Northgate (around Northgate Drive) have some nice examples of Mid-Century homes).

I'm glad to find this thread, snogirl. I'm planning to move to the central valley in the spring and am looking to settle down in one of the cities there. It depends on other things falling into place, but I could end up in Modesto, as nothing has been decided. I am leaning more toward Merced, but it depends on the job situation. Lots of people have posted things that make me feel uneasy about the central valley, but there have been some other opinions as well. I definitely like the idea of being conveniently located for a trip to the city or a trip to the mountains (especially Yosemite *swoon*), so I'm glad to hear that you've found that easy to swing.

Someone is happy in Modesto! That makes me feel happy, too.

Isnt it nice to be pleasantly surprised?

I felt the exact same way about my move to Sacramento a few years back. Its 100 times nicer than I thought it would be.

Glad your happy. Nothing beats being happy.

Modesto is horrible! Congested roads, horrible drivers, lots of bums and meth-heads always riding their bikes at night. People call it Methdesto! It's great if your bilingual and work in construction! North Modesto is the better part, it's real hit and miss when it comes to finding quiet areas where people aren't partying or getting the cops called on them. Tons of peircing and tattoo parlors if you like that. Lots of mom and pop taquerias and there's tons of taco trucks too if you like that stuff. I grew up here and have watched it slowly decline. Lots of ignorant ghetto people. period.
