Smile maybe Santa Rosa?

Hello all !
Been checking out this site for a month or so - seriously considering relocating to CA. Seems like I might be moving in the wrong direction in a lot of folks' opinions but . . . best friend moved to LA a few years ago and LOVES it - been out to visit her and I LOVE it! Think I'm more of a N.Cal girl tho -- I've seen some really useful feedback on here from locals and am looking for same about Santa Rosa area. How quick to get to the shore? Good beaches? Do-able rents? ($800 -$1200 1-2 br) Don't know how much I'll be offered in my field yet and with RE so high thinking I'd start out renting for a yr or 2 and get a feel for the area. Been stuck in KS for toooooo long - the natural beauty of CA feeds my soul and that's priceless -- now it's time for me to get down to the practical details of moving. All input greatly appreciated! gizmo & fishstix - saw your posts on the Santa Rosa page and if you see this would like to hear from you

poor soul

been to Santa Rosa many times in the last 21 years- back in 1986-1988 a nice new home was 100K- today same home is 500K

was last in SR in 2003- still a nice place to live- but has grown much- with an influx of some undesirables.

Downtown is pleasant-plenty of shopping, good restaurants. Lots of recreation locally along the coast, Russian river, the wineries etc... 50 miles from San Francisco. Mild 4 season Mediterranean climate that varies enough so as not to become boring, compared to southern CA. Traffic has become very bad- on the only freeway US 101. Very beautiful area- much more so then southern CA. Has some green.

Schools are ok- not great. Not 'paradise' as it was 20 years ago- but a nice enough place to live if you have the income or money.

I just returned from visiting my parents in Santa Rosa.

It's quite beautiful and strange looking to a New Englander like me. The Valley Oak trees and other vegetation all seem quite exotic.

If I had to live in California I'd be tempted to look carefully at Santa Rosa.

It's not VT, but it's not without charm ;-)

I'm 90 miles N. of SR. I drive there to go to Costco every month or so. The downtown area is pretty, but the traffic is horrible. They are constantly trying to widen the freeway but are always a step behind. It's hard to even navigate the surface streets from 3-6pm-ish on weekdays. If I had to live down there, I'd move to Sebastopol, not Santa Rosa.

Santa Rosa is rapidly growing, increased traffic and gang-related issues. Nice housing is expensive. Northern CA beaches are beautiful, but a 1-2 hour drive. Stinson Beach and Bodega Bay are both awesome! Check out the Santa Rosa newspaper The Press Democrat to see local news and classifieds for rental rates. I doubt you will find anything decent for less than $1000/mo. You may want to check out cities within a commutable distance to Santa Rosa - Sebastopol, Rohnert Park, Petaluma, Sonoma. But be prepared -- Sonoma County is one of the highest priced real estate markets in NoCA. Good luck!

I have a job offer in Santa Rosa and will probably take it. I was told that east of 101 is a better place. Could anyone recommend am elementary school there? is there another area near Santa Rosa that would be a safe area to raise 2 elem school kids? Thanks

East is better, Mark West school district is a small but good school district that feeds into Santa Rosa jr high (an ok school) and Maria Carrillo High school (good school). We left SR a few years ago (but family still lives there) to lower housing costs and get away from gangs and all that brings. Housing is very expensive, traffic galore and it some parts of town you don't want to wear red or blue.

Default Santa Rosa Thrives

I live in Santa Rosa and could not be any happier! My wife and I feel like we are on vacation everyday. The vineyards, the Oak trees, the coast, the food! It's wonderful to live here.

Check out:

SantaRosaThrives.blogspot.com

It's a new blog and forum for and about Santa Rosa. It is new, so there isn't much in the discussion forum but there are some links to some great stuff in and around Santa Rosa.

Take Care
