L.A. Times does do their damnedest to influence elections, which is really annoying (we get it, Times, you don't like Gov. Arnold), but they're not all that liberal really (maybe just a little).
I wouldn't worry about "red folks" much in SoCal, though. We have Republicans, but they're more the low taxes, small government libertarian type. Social Conservatism doesn't play well here.

Years ago, when I was young, I used to sell subscriptions for the LA Times on the telephone. I encountered quite a few people who thought the Times was too liberal and an equal amount of people who thought it was too conservative. Yes, it's pretty much in the political center, sometimes infuriatingly so, and except when it comes to entertainment industry coverage it's more parochial than the NY Times (and certainly to the right of the NY Times or NY Daily News)

I hate to say this, but to get stories out of the LA region, someone has to pay for them. The LA Times puts out stories over the AP which is how they get on Yahoo and Google.
If the LA Times went out of business and stopped paying journalists, gawd only knows what kind of news you would get. I could report on the flowers growing in my front yard but not on much else since I don't see much else. I could make up stories about car chases and all that kind of thing and I could become a Drudge kind of journalist -- but is that what people really want? You want someone who can make stuff up?

I've been an L.A. Times subscriber for many years. Although some of the "Column One" front page stories have become embarrassing, gems like Steve Lopez make up for it. His column highlights real problems that L.A. is facing, and he holds the city council members accountable for everything they're not doing.
Now, what I don't understand is how my old newspapers seem to muliply every night! No matter how often I take them out, more appear!

The paper once was prominent and successful, but has quickly gone down the tubes in the past 5 years, because Conservative readers don't want to read a liberal slant each and every day.
