I don't believe this an issue for most locals. I think this comes from people moving here from the cities, honestly.

I think you've definitely hit on something here about natives vs. non-natives.

IMO, even though Paso and Atascadero are mere minutes from each other, I don't see a problem like that for Atascadero.

No problem. It's amazing to me that we have one of the best and well know agricultural colleges in our own backyard and may people just don't know about all the programs they offer. There are also co-ops alllll over the county that offer great food for low prices. All you have to do is ask
I try not to go to walmart just because I don't like processed foods and poorly made goods. Besides, what are they going to do with Kmart if Walmart comes in? There goes all of those jobs and now we have a big vacant building.

probably it will be 99 cents store. I wouldn't worry too much about K-Mart. I would worry more about other grocery stores.
So im just going to point one thing.
There are 3 shopping centers proposed in San Luis Obispo
2 next to Costco, and 1 next to the Promenade.
There are 4 department stores that can go in SLO: Kohl's, Target, Lowe's, and Macy's
And we know Kohl's and Target are still looking. The question is then, which store will be third? I think Macy's is going to be in some of upscale mall next to Home Depot. And I think Lowe's won't come here because it would be too close to Home Depot and the home improvement sales have been dropping in SLO. I think Osh and Home Depot are barely making it in south county.

I talked to an assistant manager today at the Macy's in Ventura. The lady told me that they never had Visalia on their list for a store there. She did say they had San Luis Obispo on the radar, and had attempted to go there twice in the Marketplace. Once in the San Luis Obispo Marketplace and once in the Dalidio Ranch Marketplace. In 2007, they put all of the new Macy's locations on hold. She said perhaps in 2010 or 2012 when the market is better Macy's could go back in San Luis Obispo.
Again, I think Target will go in Prefumo Creek Commons and Kohl's will go in San Luis Obispo Promenade 2. And then I think the third shopping center next to Irish Hills Plaza will have Macy's.
Either way I see it. Target, Kohl's, and Macy's are possible canidates for San Luis Obispo.
I just see Lowe's done with San Luis Obispo.

If all of this retail growth takes place in SLO I hope you all like living in "Orange County." because that is what it will look like.

No offense but I doubt an assistant manager in Ventura would know everything that was going on in the corporate office.
For example, she said they put all new stores on hold in 2007.
But just 3 or 4 months ago Macys said they were opening new stores around Phoenix, a store in Gilbert AZ will open in Fall 2009, and 2 other stores will open in 2010. So her knowledge is a little incorrect.

Agreed. More retail, more people, more crime. Then, people will leave because they miss the 'small town atmosphere' that they helped destroy. I've always been curious as to why the people who are extremely pro retail growth don't just move somewhere where there IS retail growth and leave my town alone.

Because as long as anyone who has lived along the Central Coast (including ex-residents like me) talks about it being wonderful, everyone will want a piece of it. You need to tell people the negatives if you want to keep them away.

We have San Luis Obispo on our list for relocation. Does the area have adequate Health Care services?
