Atascadero/Paso Robles
I might be offered a job in Atascadero and relocating there from NC. The housing market seems cheaper in Paso Robles, is it a difficult commute from Paso Robles to Atascadero?

The Passage of the Oaks....Paso Robles
No it's not far at all, just jump on hwy 101 and Atascadero is about 10 minutes south. Paso Robles is a nice little town, it has pretty much everything you need, a small mall with Penney's, Walmart, Kohls, and a few other stores. There are quite a few Mom & Pops in town that are struggling like everyone else, but it seems as though they are all necessary and keep the economy afloat in that area. If you can't find what you are looking for in Paso, then Templeton, Atascadero and San Luis Obispo are all within 30 minutes of Paso. The ocean is about 30 minutes away as well. I loved living in the Central Coast area, lived there for about 4 years until we took a new job in New Mexico. Good luck on your ventures, hope this helps.

You can probably drive from town to town on HWY 101 in 5 minutes. Is that job at the state mental hospital? I've seen other posts by out of state residents who have said they are considering taking a job in Atascadero. Can't imagine it would be anywhere else but that hospital.

Not the State Mental Hospital
If I had experience for any type of medical position there are plenty where I live now. If you are a nurse, medical equipment technician, doctor or any other medical related job you can pretty much right your ticket here, and perhaps most places in this country.
But thank you for the travel info. I'm originally from NYC and ten miles can take 40 minutes or more in NY.

I can't seem to figure out how you edit my own posts. I should have written "Write your own ticket".

Paso Robles is a wonderful city. It's got lots of jobs and places to shop. It's about a 15-20 minute drive to Atascadero.
Atascadero is struggling quite a bit these days. The community is deeply torn over whether or not developments like Wal*Mart should be allowed. Their retail and down-town is MASSIVELY struggling; most people who live in Atascadero drive to Paso or San Luis for shopping because there is simply nothing in Atascadero to take advantage of. Atascadero faces losing their status as a city and could be unincorporated within the next few years if they do not find a way to boost sales tax revenues. They are currently living off of reserves- no money to fix roads or grow safety services. I would not recommend Atascadero as a place to live.
If you are a medical professional, I would recommend Paso or perhaps Templeton. Templeton is a little town between Atascadero and Paso Robles. It is a medical community with a hospital and a high concentration of Doctor's Offices. It is a short drive from there to Paso and San Luis as well.
Paso Robles is more expensive in terms of real estate and renting than Atascadero and most of South County San Luis Obispo. Templeton is comparable to Paso Robles in that regard, maybe a little higher.
Hope this helps.

How often do you leave Shandon? In twenty minutes driving from Paso I'd be almost to Morro Bay. You can drive from town to town in five minutes.

(first post here, forgive me for just jumping in)
I lived in Atascadero from 2001 - 2007 and I loved it. I'm very saddened to hear that the city is struggling. It's a lovely little chunk of California.
With that said, Paso Robles is also very nice. If you don't mind being far from airports and other "big city" amenities, it's a wonderful place to be.

I agree completely. I've lived here since 96 (except for a brief stint in Templeton) and I've found it pretty nice. There is a distinct sense of community here, but unfortunately only if you belong to a church. I really enjoy living here, and especially like the fact that I can go on hikes, explore the riverbed and walk around town at night without the fear of being mugged. If you absolutely NEED shopping or entertainment, it's not really the place to be. Personally, I like gardening, going on hikes and generally being outdoors so it fits me well
