Another protest is taking place as marchers closed down Santa Monica Blvd in front of the Mormon Temple this afternoon. Mormons provided the bulk of the funds to stop gay marriage & therefore are the focus of the outrage. I understand that large demonstrations will continue in front of Mormon churches. This could get ugly.
While I don't endorse violence (none of us does) - I think that a LOUD message needs to be sent to the Mormon church and to the rest of the religious right. The message needs to be that personal religious beliefs cannot be and will NOT be LEGISLATED into public policy in the United States of America. As a "staight" person (for a lack of a better word), I am sick of being constantly and relentlessly assaulted by the religious right. At this moment, they are gloating about their clout and the influence they had at banning gay marriage in CA. However, let it be clear that this is just the beginning for them. They will not be satisified until each and every one of their personal and religious beliefs is legislated to everyone else. The right to legal abortion will be constantly assaulted, as well as even birth control. They have succeeded at banning ALL forms of birth control at certain drug stores across the country. A pharmacist can take the legal prescription and not only decide to not fill it, but he/she doesn't have to give it back to the customer. At this time, Colorado, S. Dakota, and a few others rejected their proposals. However, they will NOT stop there; they have a far more encompassing agenda for the rest of us as well.
Yes, there is a lot of hatred and prejudice towards gay people and we as human beings and a FREE nation need to come together and decide that the hate and fear-mongering is WRONG and will not be tolerated in this country. The people that voted "yes" for this proposition need to know that these same people (the Mormons and the religious right of our country) will be attacking other things that WILL have a direct affect on the rest of us who are not gay (or gay). They are getting strength and fortitude from this first "win". It is really important that we all realize what is going on here and see who is playing whom. I post on another board where some of the women on there are Mormon. Personally, not living in CA at the time, I was not really that aware of Proposition 8. However, they certainly were and most of them didn't even live in CA. Howeer, they are indeed Mormon; thus it is their BUSINESS to know everyone else's business. The cr*p that they typed about this proposition and the commercials that they talked about being aired, was bonafied propoganda meant to influence people through fear and hate-mongering. More and more, I find myself shocked that what I'm reading from these women is coming from those that are living in 2008 vs. people living in the Dark Ages.
Wake up people and realize that the religious right of our country isn't going to just go after gay rights. They will go after EVERYONE and will not rest until every single one of their moral and religious beliefs are legislated into public policy. There is NO separation between church and state as far as the religious right is concerned. I think that this should concern all of us who are Christian, non-Christian (subscribe to other religions and beliefs) as well as those who do not subscribe to any religion. What we have going on here is BIG, it transcends the gay marriage right (although this is EXTREMELY important; please understand this); the religious right of this country has gained new confidence and brashness and will continue to assault on different fronts. Be aware of it and think about it. Don't think that this is where it ends. For the religious right, this is where it begins.
So about that traditional marriage thing.. When Same-Sex Marriage Was a Christian Rite - Colfax (http://www.colfaxrecord.com/detail/91429.html - broken link)
Interesting story.
Much of it though deviates from every account in the bible. Although I'll be the first to admit that we don't know the ways of God-only what we have in front of us.

My parents and much of my family attends Church at the chapel next to the Oakland Temple.
The building on the left. Anyway for the first time since the 1991 East Bay Hills Fire, the entire complex is closed on a Sunday, this time cause of a protest that's supposed to happen today.
I don't think so as the US is not as leftists as those 2 but who knows?
Before it gets out of hand, we need to make civil unions just as strong as marriage on a federal level so everyone can take advantage of those rights and then take marriage out of civil laws completely.
Wonder how much support that would get? Dunno.
I agree but that would be too reasonable a compromise for the No on 8 people.
Personally, I think that would be a better cause to fight for than throwing a temper tantrum that validates what the people who against them were thinking they would do.

Much of what the church practices now deviates from accounts in the Bible, too. The argument is that Prop 8 protects traditional marriage, not biblical marriage. And it does appear that for at least several centuries, the Christian church was tolerant of same-sex marriages.
I do see things from your point of view. Unfortunately your point of view has religious connotations, which is patently un-American with regards to the state and against the seperation of church and state that the constitution provides.
If you are truly speaking about me personally MY point of view has nothing to do with my religious beliefs. MY point of view and what my thoughts were as I decided was this: a group of people are going to lose their rights. Is it going to be the Homosexuals? Or Churches? Or parents? Since voting Yes would protect two of those three groups, I voted, Yes.
And seeing the protests tells me that I was right about at least the churches.

Oh yeah, they're just "throwing a temper tantrum" because they didn't get their way. Are you serious, YOU took their rights, of course they have a right to protest and scream their frustration to the rooftops. YOU destroyed the hopes of some families to make their commitments official. Get over yourself already.

Please go back a few pages and you'll see that I wrote a post on the topic of churches. To summarize, I can't get married in a Muslim mosque or a Jewish temple or a Mormon church. Why? Because I'm not a member and those are not my beliefs. Can I sue them? No, because they are allowed to marry only their own members. Are gay people wrong to protest the churches that provided almost all of the funding for Prop 8? Hell no! They should be out there everyday letting the churches know exactly how much the money given out of hate and ignorance affects them. So you think they shouldn't be allowed to protest? Do you also believe that Congress should remove the right to assembly and freedom of speech from the Constitution?

Good, I'm joining the boycott on Utah, not that I ever bought anything from there or went there but if the opportunity arises I certainly won't. I wish I could also boycott all things Christian but that's a bit harder to pin down seeing as I go to a Catholic college. But at least the professors and administration here put out No on 8 signs (gotta love those Jesuits). And besides, the only real "Catholic" state is Massachusetts and gay marriage is legal there so... To be fair though, I don't think the Mormons should bear all the blame because it certainly isn't all their fault. To be fair we should just remove the tax exempt status of all churches so as not to single any one in particular out.
