What are some thoughts and ideas for living near the SF baby area of living in a house boat?

You DO realize that houseboats need to be maintained? Check into the costs before you think of doing this.

OP, the Bay Area isn't Southeast Asia. Houseboats are very expensive, whether to rent or buy. Maybe back in the hippie days of the 1960's they were cheap, but not any more.

You're getting way ahead of yourself. Focus on completing your community college degree, and getting accepted at a 4-year university, and getting through your biology major with good grades. There are no houseboats anywhere near UCSF, btw. You're just grasping at straws.

Get your BA, look for internships while you're doing your bio major, to have related work experience on your resume, then look for jobs related to your major in CA, for your 1-2 years of establishing residency. Those are the steps you should be focussing on now, not houseboats. Things will fall into place, once you get your BA and a decent job after graduation (see my job suggestions on your other thread).

There are hardly any transient slip and the ones that are there are coveted. Many have time limits too. A marina sleep can be about as expensive as renting an apt. Then you have boat maint. Bigger boats will need the hull cleaned regularly and you need to hire a pump out service for the head. Most marinas don't allow live aboards either.

If you have anything with engines your maint costs are going to be pricey. New manifolds, risers, electrical hates salt water, constantly replacing anodes in you are hooked to shore power. Not a good time unless you like that kind of stuff.

Where's mutt?

Tulemutt's the guy you should be asking for this. He's been living on a boat for years. He'll be able to give you lots of good info.

Tulemutt’s staying away from this thread .

1. Not sure this new poster is for real

2. Pretty sure if s/he is, s/he shouldn’t live on the water

3. “Houseboats” aren’t “boats” ... I like ‘em but not the same as living on a real boat on the hook or in a marina.

... oh hell, if the OP is real and wants to live on a houseboat, there is one other possible ave not yet mentioned: pontoon ‘houseboat’ at a funky old marina somewhere in the Delta ... much lower rents ... more slack from management (in some cases) for tenants who don’t know the ropes.

Then there’s the commute from Delta to wherever work is. If into Sac, or Stockton, it’s a can do ... if into the core of the Bay, Oakland or SF districts, ... um, hwy 4? Hoo brother!

Anchors aweigh!

Here's an article about a couple who lives on a boat in the Bay area. They paid $300,000 for their boat in 2005. Last year, they were paying $900 a month for their slip fee, plus electric and other costs, which they said can add as much as $300 a month. (I know Tulemutt probably lives on his boat for far less, but he's not regularly berthing in San Francisco either. )

But the article may give you some ideas about living on a boat full time in SF: https://www.businessinsider.com/coup...rd-the-boat-19

Question: do you already have experience living on a boat or houseboat?

If not, you might want to see if you can find a local marina in Alabama and ask if they can put you in touch with someone who currently lives on a boat, so you can get an idea of what is involved. Then, call a few marinas in the Bay area (pretty easy to find them online these days) to ask about costs and availability of slips, and whether they ever get boats available for rent, not purchase.

I think you may find that it isn't going to be easy to rent a boat, or even find a spot in a marina that allows live aboards, in an expensive area like the Bay area, but I could be wrong.

Also, have you looked at the admissions website for UCSF or been in touch with their office? I bet they could answer your questions about what types of housing is available to students in the program (such as how easy it is to find roommates), and what kind of costs to expect for your future planning purposes.

Good luck!

Just a heads up, Mutt, but the poster is planning to commute to UCSF Dental School. Any other suggestions?
