It really is sad to read so many negative things about Stockton. First, I must agree that the home foreclosure rate is extremely high due to the greedy developers who built upon excellent agricultural land (in North Stockton), as well as the national sub-prime mortgage mess, without a thought of expanding and recruiting more companies and jobs. I lived in Stockton for 30 years and found it to be an wonderful place to live. We have recently moved to the Reno/Tahoe area to retire. Stockton is a great place to be from because so many fine places to visit are only a nice day's outing; for example Napa Valley, San Francisco, Sacramento, Lake Tahoe, Reno, Yosemite, the "foothill communities" and many Native American Indian Casinos. Stockton has one of the county's best universities: The University of the Pacific, a beautiful campus and a top-notch School of Pharmacy. Also, other higher education institutions are in Stockton such as the community college named Delta College. Additionally, Stockton now has a State University in addition to Humphrey's College where one may obtain an education leading to a PhD in Law.
If you want a beautiful home, yet demand a large salary, work in San Jose and take the ACE train or work in San Francisco and live like a millionaire in Stockton where you will see trees and lawns instead of the city living that offers a concrete landscape.
The Lincoln School District is superior. Our son was accepted at three Ivy League Universities, yet choose to stay in Stockton to attend the pricey University of the Pacific where he received an excellent education.
In regard to climate, the spring and fall are perfect. During the hot summer, turn on your air-conditioner. During the winter, turn on the furnace or enjoy a relaxing evening in front of your fireplace.
I find it interesting that few people mention that Stockton is on the Delta. Large ships transport goods to from the Pacific Ocean countries (ie:Asia) to The Port of Stockton and back again. There is so much fun to be had on the Delta. One can sail or power from Stockton to San Francisco or Sacramento. The Delta is great for fishing, boating, water skiing, jet sking, clubing, houseboating, and other water sports. The Delta has 1,000 miles of waterways. Stockton has several malls and plenty of entertainment such as plays, theaters, sports (hockey, baseball, big-name concerts, etc.). Like any city there are the good areas such as Lincoln Village West, Morada, around "the University", and Brookside where many homes sell from the high $300,000's to over one-million dollars. The Central, East and South sides of town are considered, in general, much more affordable for those not able to afford the Northwest or far Northeast (Northeastast of Hwy 99) sides of Stockton. People seem surprised that Stockton has a large Hispanic population~~~;It's located in one of the largest bread-baskets in the world. Without the farm workers and the many agricultural products grown in the San Joaquin Valley many people in the world would have nothing to eat. After Vietnam the community came together to aide the Southeast Asian people. Thus, Stockton is a very multi-cultural city. If that bothers you; then live elsewhere. The only reason that we left Stockton is because we are avid skiers and also enjoy gambling and concerts. Of'course Lake Tahoe is fantastic in the summertime for boating and in the wintertime for skiing, also. If anyone knows of a city with a population number simular to Stockton that has NO crime, please tell me. No matter where one lives or travels, one should always take precautions.
Don't scratch Stockton off your list.
