I agree with a couple of the earlier posters. It is not overpopulation so much as it is dumb use of resources.

We all watched the housing market "boom" for the first seven years of this decade. Us Southern Californians watched homebuilders put up mini-mansions in the Inland Empire. The entire Corona valley was built out during this period, yet no new expressways. No one stopped to think about how all these new homeowners would get in and out of the area efficiently. No one thought that maybe a bunch of 2000 to 5000 square foot homes was a poor use of limited land. No one thought that just maybe the subdivision/ strip mall model is outdated for California's changing needs. In many ways it was a dumb use of land. But the IE cities loved it because they were looking at potential property tax revenues. The builders loved it because they made a killing during this time.

That is kind of the problem with California. In many of the areas where we are pro business we do it in very short sighted and backwards ways. And then we try to make up for it by being draconian in other areas. California needs more balance.

Also, we have the worst group of political leaders in the country, IMO. There is no way I can operate my little household with out some kind of budget and plan. Yet, we have people who are trying to run the one of the largest and most diverse economies in the world with NO BUDGET! No one wants to give up anything. So our state legislature grinds to a halt.

It shows another real problem for California. There are too many divergent interests.

yes that's true. too many people that don't really give a sh-it about the place. they're just here to make a buck and get what they can. totally f-ucked up the place and that's where the entire country is going.

The world is overpopulated, here and everywhere else. It's a problem that no one wants to accept. California would be great with less people. The world can not continue to grow. The earth is finite. We do not need more people. We need less, and not just in California, but the entire world. The earth's carrying capacity is one billion people and we are at 6 billion and look at the wreck we are creating. Humans have multiplied because oil has allowed us to not have to use animals or our bodies to get things done.

Unfortunately the other thing people are not realizing is that peak oil is here. That means that the population is growing but there is less and less oil to go around. The United State boomed because of oil found in the early 1900, but we hit our peak of finding and pumping it out in the 1970's and don't think we don't keep looking over here, but we just don't have all that much. The Arab states are hitting the peak now and will be where we were in the 1970's, but it's going to be a world wide disaster.

So population needs to come down, here and all over the earth. Thanks for reading. There is a lot of literature about this out there if you care to read about it. One of these days we need to start focusing on the issues rather than all the little mundane things that are in our news.

By the way, California is so beautiful and the weather is so fantastic, there will always be businesses and people here. Believe me, I'm from Texas!

Well others may ne agree with you but I do. We are way overpopulated on earth. Although I heard or read somewhere that we could maintain a reasonable quality of life with about 3 billion people, still half what we have now.

It was a joke back in the sixties about how easy it was to get rich in CA with the right frivolous law suit. The problems of CA and other states are far more complex than population alone. I think we would be hard pressed to find volunteers to be euthanized to solve population problems...There are several ideologies that can share the blame for any states problems not just CA's.

I disagree that the state and earth are significantly overpopulated. Where do you get the idea that the earth can only support 1 billion folks???

Of course the population distribution and land usage can always be debated, as could the use of technology for agriculture, fresh water creation and polution control.

But, the population limit discussion doesn't appear to be adequately supported.

Amen especially when landowners are paid not to plant.
