Hello,
Can anyone tell me what the average rent would be for an apartment in San Luis Obispo? I would only need a small one-bedroom but would like to be in a safe neighborhood. Thank you!

Well.. most of SLO is pretty safe.
How old are you and why are you moving here? There are certain area's I'd recommend staying out of if you want peace and quiet (due to college students). If you're looking for a 1 bedroom, you're probably looking in the range of $600-$1000+.

Excellent! I'd recommend looking Morro Bay or Los Osos if you want peace and quiet. It's a little less expensive and it's much much more peaceful. Take a look at craigslist to get a good idea of the areas and prices, but it's a fairly small community.

JJ,
Have they solved the sewer issues in Los Osos yet? I saw some real cheap lots near Baywood and I was wondering if that is why they are so cheap?

Nope. In all honestly, I love living in Los Osos, but I wouldn't buy a house here right now, until all the sewer crap ( ) is taken care of. It's nonstop bickering, and the community really has a chance to develop a sustainable waste management program, but instead just wants to throw up a sewer and waste treatment plant in the middle of town.
If they do decide to build the waste treatment plant/sewer, taxes are going to go up quite a bit, which is probably why lots are cheap.

It would have to be a faculty position to be paid well. The staff positions don't pay well enough to afford much in that area. I was offered a job at Poly and they got permission to offer me 25% above the starting salary. It was STILL 10K LESS than I was offered in Santa Barbara (which isn't a whole lot) and the rent difference wasn't enough to make 10K less in salary affordable (the rent I was looking at was just a hair less than what I pay in SB).

There really aren't any unsafe neighborhoods in San Luis or the south county, bad things can happen anywhere though.
You did not give your income. San Luis is pricey. And, consider, you don't want an apartment. You did not spend your life getting to the point where you want to live under someone, over someone, next to someone, sharing their life, their arguments and their lovemaking. You want a stand alone, even if it is a mobile home.

stay away from Nipomo and Oceano. They have the Nipas 13 gang members in those urban communities.
