SLO has the best farmers market that I have ever seen. Every Thursday night downtown on Higuera St

Prices have dropped but, not by that much ... $480K on average last month ... which is still pretty pricey.

Especially since there aren't many good paying jobs there. You either have to work at the university or the prison but ... that's about it.
Great town but it is expensive.

True. But the absolute best paying jobs are at Diablo Canyon. Taken as a whole, ALL their employees are paid big bucks. You dont find that with the govt. or the uni's. The lackies at Diablo make 70K. People in SLO Co. really aren't educated about this. Wanna make big bucks here? It's that nuke plant people. A lot of politics and a lot of "who you know", but if you are determined, you can find a way out there.

You know, I think the job thing may have gotten tougher recently. Here's what we're dealing with:
Diablo Canyon - 7 jobs within 50 miles of SLO. That's not that much.
CMC - yes, they do have positions that we are applying for ...we're hoping...
ASH - no admin positions, they do have psyc tech jobs but those take 1 year of training
Small business jobs - forget about it. You'll be completing with 30-40 Cal Poly grads. Blonde Cal Poly grads.
Large businesses - Best Buy, Target, Costco, UPS, Borders, Barnes and Noble...all not hiring.
Temp agency - no jobs. 7, yes 7, jobs in the entire county.
And my husband has a *lot* of experience (4-7 years) and a very high state ranking. It's is a really tough economy. The state budget is so tight, that's not helping. Finally, I think the "out of state" thing isn't doing him any favors.
Anywho, hope you have a different experience - just my 2 cents

CMC is probably the best bet. I know people who work out there and they say CO's are needed. Guards have transferred away from SLO because of housing costs. Pay and benefits are excellent. From my understanding, psych tech school is 9 months and you get paid. Is that wrong?

Just FYI: there's lots of CO's who work at the Soledad prisons who are commuting from SLO, Paso, etc. and, who are waiting to transfer to CMC. They are going to get preference over any new hires so ... I wouldn't hold my breath for that one.
If you're thinking of becoming a psych tech ... ASH is very dangerous. Unlike the prisons, there's no cops to protect you there. Staff does get attacked and, strange as it may sound, they do expect you to put up with it. Of course the prisons also hire psych techs but, those jobs are limited.
Right now the state has a hiring freeze because of the budget crisis so, unless they can't fill positions any other way ... don't hold your breath.

Your impressions are quite accurate of what's actually going on. If you look at the Economic Forecast for SLO County, we will bleed jobs until 2010--the low point--and then things are projected to pick back up, but we'll still be lower than 2007 levels after that.
