Where to move??
I am looking to move to California. I am a 21 year old massage therapist, hoping to start up a practice. I have only been to Arcata, Ca and wasn't a huge fan. I am trying to find a place thats not too expensive to rent, good surfing, not a HUGE city, looking for under 100,000 people, close to beach, and is SAFE!
I know SAFE is a hard one to come by, but coming from a small town in colorado I would like to find a place where I don't feel threatened to walk around alone.
I have looked at Santa Cruz, but looks dangerous, and not a great thriving place to start a business. Thinking maybe Santa Barbara or surrounding area. PLEASE give me some advice. I am trying to move in 3 weeks, and I'm still completely lost!
NAMASTE

'Safe' as in town or 'safe' as in not so sharky surfing? Or Both?
Santa Cruz is not a place I'd ever call unsafe...but I've lived in really tough neighborhoods before...
A massage practice of your own? Or starting by working for a spa or dr. office?
What's your renting range?
Ca. ain't cheap.

A safer town... I've lived in the mountains of CO my whole life and I am not too used to having to watch my back. Maybe just a town that is safer.. or safer parts? not too worried about sharks. I am open to working for a spa or a Dr. but eventually would like to start and build my own practice. I am looking for something under $1000 a month to rent don't need much space because all I am bringing is my car. I have no pets and am a non smoker. Just looking for a town with cool people around my age,

Sonoma County is close to beaches, Dillon Beach to be exact 20 minutes from P-town.
Rather chill in its mellowness. Easy access to tons of spas etc since it's wine country...Sonoma State campus therefore a younger crowd can be found.
Only 32 miles to SF...there's surfing in Bolinas, Goat Rock, Stinson, and Dillon.
rent for instance:
Charming Flat near downtown

Why California? You've only been to California one time and you are moving in three weeks.
Have you ever operated a business before? What is your business plan?
What does "not too expensive" mean?
How much television do you typically watch per week?

FIRST, I have no TV, and haven't watched it in over 5 years. Not sure what you are implying but get over it.
No I have never owned my own business, but a massage business isn't too difficult to run. And "not too expensive" mean less than 1000 a month for housing rental. I still have to rent a space for a practice. OK SO now that we've gotten that over with, any advice on places to go or would you like to pick further into my life?

Maybe Charles didn't need the TV comment, but I'd be careful about getting snappy. People on here are taking time to help or give advice. You're asking us, you know what I'm saying? You don't have to answer anyone's questions. But, getting snappy, I don't suggest it.

Santa Cruz unsafe? Never heard of that area as being unsafe [lots of students\ cafés\ laid back\ hippy\ weed]. Santa Barbara would probably have the clientèle but it is expensive though not too bad around Goleta\ UCSB.

$1000 a month? What kind of housing are you expecting to get for that? You might find a studio in a run down noisy building for that price. If your business plan only allows that much for rent, you should think long and hard about whether you actually know what you're doing.
