Or like in Kansas where they were burning Harry Potter books. I just don't want to be in an environment like that. It is like Colin Powell said, "And so what if Obama is Muslim." I would prefer to investigate a place where the predominant belief isn't to hate something different, like Muslims. It is like the McCarthy era except Communist has just been swapped with Muslim.

Yeah, that's not cool. I'd say stick to the larger areas.

New Hampshire? Hmm, I never thought about that. I got accepted to Dartmouth as an undergrad, but couldn't afford it.
My favorite parts of CA are SLO, Sonoma, and smaller outlying areas of the bay area. However, I really like teaching. It is more than just a job for me. Unfortunately, all of those areas and here in SoCal just are not affordable for teachers. I hear about single teachers in Ohio or wherever with homes. Now I don't want to go to Ohio, but somewhere with a college nearby, places to hike/bike/etc., and not overly crowded everywhere you go.
Eugene was on my list, but low jobs and too much gloom. I like Colorado, but teacher pay is really low.

They need teachers in NH, and the median housing price matches the median wage much better than out here on the west coast. There's the cold, of course, but I think I'm up to it. Plus, it's not as cold on the Seacoast as it is farther inland. I love the four seasons.

Texas most likely. COL and salary combo is awesome. Love lots of other things about the state too.

If I were you I'd look into college towns ... I grew up in Norman OK (U of Ok) and think it's pretty liberal for the area. There are people of color and diverse thought, but I have no idea about employment.

Yeah, I lived in Austin also. The problem is ... that's supposed to be one of the most liberal areas of the state although I never really saw much difference and your post certainly demonstrates that.
Unfortunately the most tolerant areas of the country tend to be the most expensive also.

I'm sorry but this is nonsense. Travis county voted 64% to 35% in favor for Obama. In the actual city of Austin the vast majority voted for Obama. There are numerous areas of California that are more conservative, such as Orange and San Diego counties.
The only difference with California vs some of these other states is that there are more lefty areas. Put stay in California, enjoy the liberal policies that make this state so great! 3rd highest unemployment rate, one of the highest costs of living, some of the highest taxes. A true paradise!

I'd be very interested to know where your dad actually lives, albinoazian. I don't doubt that he lives in Texas and he might even live near Austin, but I seriously doubt he lives in Austin or even Travis County.
