SoCal Grad School from SoAL...
Moving to SoCal from SoAL... I really want to get into grad school there (at a CSU or Chapman U), but heard from my BF, who was born and raised in SoCal, that Cali universities are not the most accepting of anyone from outside of Cali (academically). Does this mean an out-of-stater that has a really great academic record will get pushed aside because a local with a less-than-desirable record is just that...local??? Any help from anyone would be great...!!!

I don't know about CSU, but I have some experience with UC. Science grad schools in UC are often 50% or more foreign students. I guess it also depends on your major.
As an out-of-stater, you do have to pay a lot more in tuition fees than a California resident. It could be a good idea to establish residence in SoCal before applying.

...yyeaaahhh, I thought about that, it's just that I REALLY am wanting to get out of the SE United States!!! (If you've been here, you'd understand! ;-)) My question was actually more geared toward my acceptance...if it's worth it being that I'm NOT from a local comm college and I'm NOT a California HS graduate. You see? As far as the tuition, I know I'll have to pay more regardless, at least for my first year. Thanks for the input, though!

certain schools are considered "impacted" and have to turn down qualified applicants. examples would be csu long beach, san diego state, and a few others. otherwise, if you meet the qualifications, you shouldnt have a hard time getting in

Your best bet is to narrow down your choices to a few schools (based on the degree program and on location) and then contact the Graduate Admissions office of those schools and ask them how to improve your chances of getting into your chosen program. They are there to help you and answer these exact questions!

The public schools greatly prefer California residents for undergrad. But for graduate studies I don't think there is a strong preference. The private schools don't care.
