Smile Considering Relocating To Yuba City/marysvill/oroville.

Hi All,

We are considering relocating to the Yuba City/Marysville/Oroville area from Charlotte, NC. There is a possibility that DH might be offered a job in Sacramento, and I plan to go to school in Cal State, Chico, so we want to live in a place where it won't be too much of a commute for either one of us. I had a couple of questions about the area:

I have heard this area is "rural". How rural is it? Are the homes completely isolated from each other and are there huge open farms there?

How are the schools in the area?

How is Oroville? What is the population like? How are houses and schools?

What is the crime rate in these areas?

How is the commute between these areas and Sac and also between these areas and Chico?

Any help from you guys is deeply appreciated as we have to decide in less than a week's time. Thanks in advance for your time.

Anu.

Default The area

I grew up in the area.

If you plan to go to Chico State and for him to work in Sacramento then Yuba City will be your best bet for a easy commute.

Sacramento is about an hour from Yuba City.

Chico is about an hour in the opposite direction of Sacramento from Yuba City.

Unless you are planning to buy a house (which is cheaper in Yuba City) then I wouldn't recommend living there, you won't save much rent $ as if you were to live in Sacramento.

Yuba City is somewhat rural if you mean rural from other areas. Half of the city is in the countryside and the other half is filled with suburban sprawl that stretches across the bridge to Marysville/Olivehurst (which are not nice areas).

Yuba City is OK, but there are not many really safe areas. The schools are very iffy so you will want to look for one in a newly developed part of town (north of bridge St.)

Oroville is a smaller town than Yuba City and does not offer a whole lot in way of amenities, but a basic simple way of life. I don't know a whole lot about the school system.

Overall the whole area caters to primarily Spanish people, retirees, and working poor/middle class.

See my reply to the other post.

Default Be nice now....

Marysville is very nice. There are parts of both cities that are undesirable.

From what I understand Oroville is an interesting town, of about 13 000 people. However, I was surprised when I looked it up on city data the community has a very high crime rate, including relitively high violent crime. The town is also very economically depressed, with very high poverty, but nearby areas seem to be very nice without the same problems. Also there is lake Oroville, and access to great outdoor recreation in the nearby mountains.

I thought Marysville was a gorgeous community, very quaint, historic and well preserved, and laid back feeling, but not touristy. I didn't see any areas that seemed undesirable in Marysville, and I want all through it. I did see some pretty bad looking areas in olivehurst and Linda to the south, though.
