Default Palm Springs Pros And Cons

AKgirlinCA wrote:

Pros:
NO smog!
Beautiful mtn views
Fairly affordable homes/rentals
really no traffic that I've noticed
all the stores you need
seems very safe (except for Indio)
if you like sun, it is probably sunny there at least 320 days a year
lots of golf courses
not too far from Big Bear for skiing
the beach is probably a couple hours
slow pace
not the concrete jungle the rest of SoCal is
wonderful restaurants and resorts

CONS:
VERY hot as everyone has mentioned
HIGH utility bills
this may or may not be a con depending on your lifestyle: very high retiree and gay pop. - doesn't bother me but it may some
No seasons really

this is all I can think of for now...hope this helps

Great summary. How easy do you think it is for newcomers to move to Palm Springs and get hired in January, given that Palm Springs and Riverside Co. are in a recession? I'm in Flagstaff now and there are NO jobs and 10%+ unemployment.

More specifically - in the fields of: 1) Communications / Media 2) Horticulture / Nursery Work

As for the Cons you mention, they are non-issues from my point of view. I am a sun worshiper and never use air conditioning, even when I lived in Vegas. I have no problem w/ a high gay population or retirees. I hate rain, snow, cold weather, seasonal changes. Lots of wealthy gays and retirees mean there is plenty of discretionary income (purchasing power) for my two fields of employment. I do not know yet if I am moving to Southern California or not.

Thanks! I'm glad the summary was helpful. I honestly can not comment on what the job situation is like out there....I assume there will be more jobs available in Riverside....BUT the Palm Springs area is comprised of different communities such as : La Quinta, Desert Hot Springs, Palm Desert, Bermuda Dunes, Indio, and of course Palm Springs itself. Between all of these, there should be something available I would think. I would ask Twinkle Toes as she is a resident of Palm Desert and knows the area very well, also Craigslist and Monster.com.....if the cons don't bother you, I think you would be very happy in PS, it is a very nice, beautiful area. I would actually live out there as I prefer a slower pace, but hubbby doesn't want to deal with the heat!
