Avoid those cars/SUVs that have that green stripe. I would also second the notion about making yourself a legal resident. The only immigration checkpoints are at the border.

drove from San Diego to El Centro and back thru I8 and was never stopped. there are a lot of DHS check points though. i saw cars stopped and checked but most were just let go
