Moving from Italy to Edwards AFB (Lancaster, Mojave: to rent, low crime, school)

Hello everybody.
I'm a Warrant Officer of the Italian Air Force, and in few months I'm moving to Edwards AFB ( Mojave Desert) for 3 years.
We've already lived in Lancaster in 2001/2002, but we did not have any babies yet.
Now we have two wonderful babies ( a girl 4 y.o., and a boy 8 months) and I wonder if there is a specific school I should choose instead of others in Lancaster.
I Don't have any clue about what I'm going to pay for them(if there is a lot of difference among them), and if I can be relaxed about the enviroment my children will find in the school.
We are going to rent an appartment in a Residence in the west side of lancaster, so I guess we will live in a low crime zone...but what about the children at school?
