Thanks for all the responses. Maybe some of you are right in that I'm just depressed. I have found myself being very angry & hateful at times & it's probably depression. Anyway, on a more positive note about Santa Barbara...it's not as bad as I said.

Actually, the little bungalow houses in the downtown area are quite cute. I've always loved neighborhoods like that. I think this would be a great place to raise a family. Maybe not so much a city for a young single person like myself. But, I do see some of the appeal. I just thought it was overrated. But, it's definitely not as bad as I made it out to be. Hope I didn't offend too many people. When comparing this to another small city it is probably much better. You do have the ocean right there and I do love California in general, it's a wonderful state.

Also, the hospital I'm working at is pretty horrible & backwards so that has a lot to do with my bad attitude.

No problem. Working in a law firm will give a person a bad poor attitude at times too!

It all changed when they took out the stoplights on the 101 dont get me wrong it helped the traffic but the town has never been the same every since.
And now they want to get rid of the free parking in the downtown I read it here www.50statesforum.com

The line out the door every weekend is an example of how popular it is.
La Superrica is pretty busy every single day. I just drove by at around 8pm tonight (Thursday) and there was a line out the door. Had to resort to free stuff at Trader Joe's.

Right on Captain Dan!

Or come to my little Indiana town called Elkhart, just 60 miles East of Gary. Here you can enjoy negative 17 degree weather, rednecks, bland gloomy scenery, uptight folks always in your business, the HIGHEST unemployment rate in the country (fact), Horrible clothing, and super high taxes!

So you don't like SB? I loved SB, and as much as I respect your opinion I found Santa Barbara to be a very nice town, wish I could live there. I hope you find a town you like.

Did you visit SB for a few days before you took the job?????????????

About your last sentence, VERY true. You job has the trickle down effect. If you hate your job it's like a zombie infection, it will contaminate the rest of your being. Or even if you like your job, if you work with a bunch of A-holes that can reek havoc on your personal life as well. I know, I used to work in factories (til they all closed down) and that was the worst, most depressing time of my life. I had to be severely medicated to deal with it. Don't feel bad Hope things are getting better. Good luck

You need to start being happy with yourself first. Start off there. I know where your coming from. But you need to value what you DO HAVE today. And plan your life to where you want to be. Good luck!

Default Now THIS is strange.....

I just got back form Malibu Yesterday (I'm in Nevada) You my dear didn't see any houses because the houses I SAW (Drove up Rambla Vista into the hills) were spectacular indeed! Let me share this with you though. I don't think you will be disappointed with San Diego at all! Sometimes our expectations are so big...I just think we need to settle our minds and bring our expectations into check so that we can really SEE what is there. It also depends on what part of the city you are in and what you are exposed too. I had a wonderful day In Malibu on Friday. Got there about 11:30 before all of the traffic and had a wonderful time and saw many nice things. I do understand your thoughts about Santa Barbara. I would have NEVER traded it for San Francisco, there is no comparison.

It has to be one of the most overrated places I have ever heard of. I'm so disappointed with myself that I bought into the nice things written about this place.

It's horrible. The beaches are ugly, you can't swim in the ocean, and you have to wear flip flops or you'll get tar on your feet. Sick. The shopping is really bad. I thought this was supposed to be one of the wealthiest cities in the country? You sure wouldn't know it from the horrible shopping and ugly homes here. The people are weird. The "downtown" (one long street only) is filled with sick homeless people who yell at you when you don't give them a cigarette. I'm a smoker, and even the heavy amount of smoking going on downtown bothers me. Surprised California is so lenient with smoking.

It takes like 2 hours to get to LA. Not a quick drive. How can people do this all the time? So weird to waste hours in your car. So, I never go to LA.

And another thing, that horrible UCSB school. Wow, a campus right on the beach? You'd think it'd be amazingly beautiful. But, it's ugly, cheap and run down.

I'm just grossed out by this whole dirty nasty city. I don't get the appeal at all!

And it's making me want to leave California for good. I adored San Francisco, so maybe I'll just go back up there for my next job. But, this place has me turned off from anything south of here. I'm worried I would be disgusted living in San Diego or LA now too.

It's so overrated here. Never move here!

Another place that is overrated is Malibu. Why do celebs live there? I drove there one day and thought it was pretty ugly. Sure the beach is amazing, but the homes are ugly and it's just one big nasty traffic ridden highway. How is this a nice little town? I don't get it.

Also, the people here seem..well, dumb. What a difference between working at Stanford and working at the dinky hospital here in Santa Barbara. Wow.

Especially the SB hospitals (let me guess, Cottage?) I have lots of traveling nursing friends, my wife's a nurse, so I know nurses, and my experience is that they tend to dislike SB. So, your anger, I can see.

But SF? Man, talk about an over rated city...
