Thanks everyone. We are thinking of renting first. It's difficult trying to figure out when we should take the plunge and buy a house. I'm trying to keep up-to-date as to when people think the market is going to finish declining (a bonus for us), So far I understand its going to be getting worse for a while and stay low for a couple of years. It's all a guess, but we're in no rush if we can wait.

Two of the biggest areas in Southern California for recreational boating are San Diego (by far the biggest) and Ventura.
What exactly do you do in recreational boating? That answer may help sort out the best place for you.

Sigh....
I guess the fellows you are talking about have their gangs and such that we hear so much of on this forum? Which neighborhoods are the ones we want to avoid?

Second west Ventura County for you. Three harbors in the area -- Santa Barbara, Ventura and Channel Islands. Marina Del Rey is the biggest with Redondo King Harbor not far away. There is also a recreational boating environment in Long Beach/San Pedro.

Further south in OC is the big-bucks, expensive to live, etc. San Diego is a huge recreational boating area.

Good luck!
