Default Spiders in Brentwood area

Hi I'm thinking of moving to the Brentwood area and I'm curious what kind of spiders are around there? I've been told there is Black Widows, & Tarantulas & lots of them ...Is that true? If so I don't think I'll be moving there!!

This has to be the oddest post of the month. I'm not trying to sound insulting, you just caught me off guard. I've never heard of Brentwood being a spider haven. You know the Tarantulas in California are basically harmless, right? They generally live further north. You have to be really careful with a tarantula, you can drop them a very short little bit and break every bone in their skeleton.

In my 20 years of living in Los Angeles County, I have seen three black widows, and never a tarantula. The black widows were in extremely dark places, where the light rarely ever shines.

We live in th San Fernando Valley and yes we have black widows. We live on a mini farm and they like all the dark places to hide. Have not been bothered by them. As far as tarantulas...I have seen them when I lived up in Tujunga Cyn. but never in the city. I have also never heard of Brentwood having a specific "spider" problem. We have fewer insects here in CA. then in most other states.

I didn't even think about the NorCal Brentwood. I heard about it recently, but had never even heard of it until about a month ago. And to think, I've traveled through that area a few times.

I automatically thought about the SoCal Brentwood, as I think most folks did, especially since anyone that's lived in SoCal for more than a few years heard about Brentwood regularly on the news throughout the O.J. ordeal (AKA trial).

As to my thoughts on the spiders, I think you will find many more tarantulas in the northern Brentwood than in the southern Brentwood, but don't think that means you'll see a lot of them. I think you may see them occasionally, but still fairly infrequently. Black widows will likely be more common, especially in dark, sheltered areas. What you will likely see the most of, though, is spiders such as the common house spider. You may encounter these nearly daily, if that area is at all like the other parts of California I've lived in. These spiders are basically harmless, but are very common.

I've lived near the City of Brentwood for 20 years (No Cal - the So CA Brentwood is just a neighborhood, not a city, so I've been told). Anyway, YES we have black widows all over the place. I could probably go out in my back yard and find 10 of them right this minute. They are shy and gentle, have never bothered us, the kids playing in the yard, or the pets. They mostly hide during the day, they get active after dark in the summertime. They like it outside, in 20 years I've only found one in the house twice. For about $25 per month, you can have regular pest spraying and then you won't have any bugs at all. We garden and have pets and kids, so we choose not to spray.
I've seen one tarantula here in 20 years, crossing a road far out in the rural countryside.
Blessings,
jld

I think the So Cal Brentwood is not incorporated, so its technically City of Los Ageles and Los Angeles County. The Nor Cal Brentwood is a incorporated city in Contra Costa County. I'm pretty sure this is acurate

Yep. You're right about the city versus the neighborhood. Southern California Brentwood is part of LA city and county and is a neighborhood or area of the city and Brentwood in Northern California is a city.

Black widows. Ah in Southern California Brentwood I would think a resident would be more likely to buy a designer bag called black widow then to see an actual spider called black widow. Even if we ever had a black widow (which is unlikely) we never go into the deep, dark spaces of our homes here. We hire out .

I am freaking out a bit though to hear that Northern California city of Brentwood has a black widow issue. Freaky. Kinda cool though too. I think one would have to not be seriously bothered by spiders though to move there (if there is a choice). Definately exterminate if you move there or you will be paranoid 24/7. .

Poor spiders they get such a bad rap. I am scared of them a bit, but I also appreciate all that they do. So I try not to kill them. They keep insect populations down especially pests outside that harm flowers and plants. They are good little workers and an asset to any home or garden.

I am more concerned about chemicals from extermination then spiders. They are a natural pest/insect controller.

Having been bitten by a black widow spider when I was a very young boy in Brentwood LA, I'm always very willing to kill them on sight. They live all over CA, but they're not very fond of the light and their webs are easily identifiable.
During the mating season, the tarantulas come out and migrate all over Mt. Diablo nearby Brentwood CCC, it's spectacular and hard not to drive over them on the road.
