I have a K and 5th at Dunlap and one in Preschool. Dunlap is a great school, besides the scores the kids are really nice and welcoming to new students. My son always tells me when he has a new friend who is new to the school.

Like ANY city, both Santa Maria and Lompoc have nice, safe, and attractive areas AND old, run down, not-so-safe areas. Both cities are full of decent, hard working people that make each a good place to live. Either would be a good choice for someone looking for a place to reside.
Speaking as someone who's lived here on and off since the mid-1970's, I actually prefer the outlying suburbs of Orcutt (Santa Maria) and Vandenberg Village/Mesa Oaks (Lompoc). Very nice, upscale residential areas with low crime, no gangs, very good quality of life, and a good choice for anybody looking for a place to live.
I could easily live in any of them, and after wandering all over the country, we have chosen Vandenberg Village as the place to retire. No place better for us. |

Just a update.....
We have now been living in Orcutt since last Feb. My son goes to Alice Shaw and loves it ! The principle is awesome ! He made Honor role.
We are already fully intertwined into the Orcutt community. What a great place to live !

It's the unfortunate truth. Sure, not everyone. But when you look at Hispanics as a group, they don't perform as well in school and they do commit more crime. It's just reality. |
