What is wrong with San Diego
I live in SC and went to my gym for a workout. A woman around my age (25) started small talk with me and told me that she just moved here from Los Angeles.
We started to talk about California and she was describing it to me because I have never been. Then I asked her what San Diego was like?
Here response was is that she has never been there! I couldnt believe this. San Diego is only about two hours from LA if I am correct.
Anyways, I have met about five other people from L.A. that moved here and its always the same. They sort of act like San Diego doesnt exist or that they dont want to claim it as part of Cali.
I am just curious becuase one day I plan on visiting L.A., San Fran and San Diego. So my question is.....
WHAT IS WRONG WITH SAN DIEGO?

Nothing really wrong with San Diego. It's a good city to visit if you are coming from another part of the country and want to experience California. But it's very similar to LA. If you live in LA, why would you spend money to visit a place that offers everything you can find in your own backyard?

This is 100% correct. The only reason to really visit it for me and my family is Sea World and San Diego Zoo/Wild Animal Park. Otherwise the LA/OC area has everything they have and more with less driving

No it's not very similar to LA at all. Different pace of life, different people/mentality/vibe, less crime, less traffic, less pollution, less crowding, less problems, etc...
Angelenos are an odd bunch, many of them live in a bubble and rarely leave LA and can many times believe its the center of the universe. There are also a lot more pretentious people in LA that like to put down San Diego b/c it doesn't feel like a big, crowded dirty city that LA is. Also SD has a much better reputation around the country and the state of CA than LA as it is cheaper, has much less crime, cleaner air, cleaner beaches, less traffic, less illegals, less Hollywood types and basically a higher quality of life overall. I'm not sure if its jealousy, stupidity, ignorance or just a combination of them all but the big city elitists in LA, and to a certain degree San Francisco too, like to snub their nose at SD for whatever reason.
Visitors tend to have a better view and experiance with San Diego compared to LA. Just compare to the two cities in Travel + Leisures annial "America's Favorite Cities" rankings and you'll see San Diego beat LA in pretty much every category: America's Favorite Cities 2008 | Travel + Leisure

San Diego is great! CA is just like everywhere else--there are always some people who just don't ever step out of their own backyards, so to speak, and don't get out much. They don't like to drive, the don't like traffic, they feel that everything they need is right where they are, etc. I can't relate to that myself, but to each his own.

I'm guessing San Diego is to LA what Sacramento is to the SF Bay Area. Probably some good reasons to visit and/or live, but the people living in the larger urban areas have little regard for the smaller area. You see that a little here in Denver, with Colorado Springs being the smaller, red-headed step child of a city
If you want to hear what's bad about San Diego, ask someone from LA. If you want to hear the good things, ask someone from San Diego.

Country clubbers and military jarheads. I could handle it, though. Pretty nice area.

Yeah, people from L.A. tend to think that San Diego is lame because everything is on a smaller scale (including crime and smog!). People who love L.A. love the bigness, the over-the-topness, so rarely have any reason to go to S.D. unless they have friends or family there who "make" them go . Just one of the many reasons that S.D. is the better place to live .
