So they've been sucked into the conspiracy. Might be a bit late though for that angry letter to the editor.

I think you're right about it being Hansen Dam, roughly looking N/NE towards Sylmar, which has what appears to be two distinctive "hills/mountains" that dip and point to where the Pacoima Reservoir is. Terrific photo!

How lucky to have seen those planes at their birthplace! I TRY to tell people I know about the rich aviation history of the Valley, but they just keep typing into their cell phones and not listening...

Something I read somewhere in this thread reminded me of something I haven't thought about in years. We used to drive up to my grandparents' house in Atwater Village (when it wasn't the new hipster hangout) almost every weekend, and my brothers and I would play down in the LA River, catching pollywogs and teensy frogs. The water drainage covers had cats faces painted on them, and I always looked forward to seeing them.

I just checked, and sure enough, I'm not the only person who liked them:

Pearson Maron: LA River Cats

We also lived in Bakersfield for a while when I was really young, and would also make the trek from there to Atwater several times a year on the Ridge Route over the Grapevine. This was before the 5 freeway was completed, and at the top of the Grapevine, there was a trout farm that we would stop at and "fish" - as much as a four year old can fish. I have never been able to find info on the trout farm on the internet, but I did correspond with somebody who runs a Ridge Route website, and he did know the history of it. I have since forgotten his information, will have to dig through old emails but here is the link to his site: Ridge Route - Home. I remember the trout farm fondly as it was always cool and shady, and they had a snack bar(?) that served hamburgers - it was the first place I ever tasted ketchup. It was also the place where my parents finally relaxed because we had made it up the grade, when so many other cars were pulled over to the side of the road, steam billowing from their engine compartments. We always seemed to have one of these hanging somewhere on the car:

The Los Angeles Times

Papoo's Hot Dog Show, a Toluca Lake institution, closed its doors on Sunday. The restaurant caters to the "old Toluca Lake crowd," customers who regard this place as their neighborhood hangout where a person can get a hearty breakfast, a hot dog or a nice cold beer.
Owner Leona Gardner said she decided to sell the restaurant because it needed more attention than she could give it, namely an extensive remodeling that she couldn't afford amid loss of profits from the economic downturn. L.A. TIMES

HI G -

my very first job was with Clancy Muldoon's on Wilshire- occasionally in Santa Monica. I was 16, and it still remains the best ice cream I've ever had. Terry was really nice to all of us. I've tried to duplicate the double chocolate, which was my favorite, and the hot fudge. I wish your family would put out a book of recipes. So often, someone would come in and ask Terry if he was interested in franchising. There is still nothing to compare, and I've lived in three cities since then.

Who remembers Uncle Ritch, Ritch at the switch, Gumdrop Gus, Cy Clone and other imaginary radio greats from the 1960s in Sacramento, Calif?
