That doesn't happen any more. The air is much cleaner than it used to be.
Just thought I'd throw in that perspective.

You know, you're right about the air. I, too, remember those smog alerts, and they were certainly much more frequent than they are now. That is one thing to be glad about. I can remember days in the Valley when I couldn't see the mountains because the smog was so bad. The thing about that is that I lived very close to the base of the mountains. The smog in the early 70s was so bad that you couldn't see a mile ahead of you at times.

The OLD Redondo Pier
http://www.redondobeachhistorical.or.../1916_pier.jpg...before the fire. And the winter storms. Winter '88 was a rough one for the pier. I was happy they finally opened the new one in '95 but it's not the same
You can see the old pier in reruns of The A Team and Simon & Simon.

I haven't heard "Paraquat Kelly" in 25 years. Awesome.
Now, what are Dr. Demento and Rodney on the Rock doing these days? Jim Ladd? Bob Coburn? the Real Don Steele?
And of course the legendary 93 KHJ.

I was just thinking about Rodney on the Rock (Rodney Bingenheimer) yesterday!!! I used to be a hard core, dyed in the wool KROQ listener - back when the station was cool and played awesome tunes! Now I have Sirius and I get Swedish Egil, Jed the Fish, Richard Blade and Fred Schneider from the B-52's. So basically, every time I get in my car it's like I've stepped into a time machine and have been transported back to the TOTALLY RAD, TUBULAR, RIGHTEOUS, SPAZZED-OUT 80's!!!

That sucks! I remember going to Sambos. In Palm Springs we have a place called Simba's Rib House and it is owned by a black family who go to my church. I wonder if anyone's going to pull the race card on them too.

Riding Stingray's everywhere. Later ,cruising VaNnUYS BLVD. heads and Highs...ha ha ha .. We used to watch Air Nat'l gaurd f-86 's (jets)take off at the airport, then listen to the sonic booms!! Well, some of those things predate my time in the Valley, but I do remember hearing about most of them. Thanks for the memories.

I worked at this one for about 5 days in the early '70's. I was maybe 20-21, they were short of waitresses, very busy, I hadn't been given a menu to study, and no one told me where anything was (where to get a salad, for example)--what a nightmare! I loved Santa Barbara, but don't miss Sambo's.
Do miss CA though, guess it's changed an awful lot since I've been there (90's). Fun thread!
