This is a great thread (wish I had time to read it all) but I imagine others have already mentioned Jungle Island at Knott's Berry Farm, where we used to spend up our excess energy. There was also that Alligator Farm across from Knott's.

Recently there has been a great show that reruns on KOCE/PBS called "Things That Aren't Here Anymore" which details all sorts of forgotten SoCal history, most of which predates me but still fascinating.

For the life of me I still cannot fathom why Disneyland removed both "America Sings" and "Country Bear Jamboree", replacing the former with an awful, cheesy interactive auto advertisement, and replacing the latter with a generic "ride on a track and see painted figures pop up" ride. If they ever tear out the Tiki Room it will signal the ending of the world I think.

One of my favorite OC nostalgia spots today is Orange Plaza Square (AKA Old Town Orange), where I regularly go to get a chocolate peanut-butter malt at Watson's Drug Store, the oldest continually running business in OC.

Log Cabin Restaurants. My Dad used to take us to the one on Imperial, West of Crenshaw. Excellent breakfasts, and you'd get to take home the metal log cabins that held the syrup.

Love's Wood Pit BBQ. I miss those places. The sauce was excellent. Supposedly one can order their sauce and seasonings from an online presence somewhere, but I'm too lazy to hunt it down atm.

The Helms man. Whenever I'd hear that whistle toot, I'd start bugging my Mom to go out there and get some goodies. I'll never forget the smell when he'd swing open those back doors and pull out the long, wooden drawers full of deliciousness. That's where I developed my fondness for maple bars. Well, that and
the place now known as Randy's. I think it was called The Big Doughnut back then.

Harby the Seal. You fellow old farts will know what I mean.

Lohman & Barkley on KFI.

The morning farm report on KFI. Every morning at 0600, Dick Sinclair (host of Polka Parade) would read off the morning farm report.

Gosh, I remember that, the Farm Report. I think it was on KNBC 4 TV too around 5 AM.

I remember Dick Sinclair and the Polka Parade too. Yep.

How about Joe "Go Gargle with Razorblades" Pyne on KABC Talkradio?

Joe Pyne / Joe Pyne Show / TVparty!

I remember him on KLAC 570. His intro music was "Tijuana Taxi" by Herb Alpert, if I recall correctly. Or maybe it was "Spanish Flea". One of those Alpert numbers.

Thank you for posting that link! I still remember the words from the song "It's a great, big, beautiful tomorrow....." The Carousel of Progress was one of my favorite attractions at Disneyland.

stan in san diego is on a distinguished road
Just now jumping in so apologies if any of this is redundant...while visiting SoCal from Phx between 66-70 took the car ferry from downtown San Diego to Coronado Island, saw air the color of yellow and the smell of sulphur in LA at a Thrifty's management meeting (how we in management hated that hand-dip!) and saw a young hippie girl on a LaJolla beach with her dress pulled up to her thighs with no panties...CA was like a different planet in a different century.

The name "Sambo" was a compound made from the two owners first names. The original was on the beach in Santa Barbara and still there as of 3-4 years ago.
