Possibly relocating to Truckee, CA... thoughts appreciated.
Hi! My husband and I are considering relocating to Truckee, CA, or a nearby area with our young children. We're hoping to relocate before we enroll our oldest child in Kindergarden so that we aren't uprooting him from school.
We've spent a lot of vacation time in the general area during all seasons, so we're familiar with the weather and general "feel" of the area, but I know living somewhere and vacationing there are not the same. Assuming we find employment, and cost is not an issue, we'd like to know how people feel about living there in general. How are the schools - Elementary throught HS? Is it easy to get to know other young families and make friends in the community? Does it have a small-town, friendly feel for those that live there? All thoughts, comments and shared experiences are welcomed and appreciated!

It is very cold and the snow piles high in the winter. I guess that is why the sking is so great in the area. I never thought of the place as a place to bring up a family unless you are survivalists?
The Donner party wintered there in the while passing on to California. They were widely criticzied for using non-traditional food sources to make it to spring.
It does have a very small town feel with local businesses.
All-in-all it has been my experience that it is more of a vacation type of a destination rather than a family town. You might be better off with a town such as Nevada City or Grass Valley.
But, that is just my opinion.

Oh, and I forgot one other city up there close ot Reno and Tahoe is Carson City. My cousin lives there and can't say enough about the place and the surrounding towns of Minden and Gardnerville. It has a mild high desert climate. Good services and nice schools. He likes to fish, hunt, ski and boating. All are close by. And, one nice thing is the taxes are low in Nevada.

Truckee is a fine town. I lived there for thirty years. The schools are good, 80%+ of the High School students go on to college. It is a town for active outdoors people. Of course skiing in the winter, Cross Country skiing is affordable and is taught in PE in the schools. Soccer, hiking, fishing, mtn biking, the lake, it is and outdoorspersons paradise. It is growing too much in my opinion.
Jobs are tough, Most good paying jobs will be found in Reno. Affordability is also an issue, although these days not so much. The market has crashed badly.

Truckee definatly is a great place to raise kids. I went to Glenshire Elementary, Sierra Mountain Middle School, and Truckee High School. The teachers are great, & the hospitals here have some of the best doctors in California. Kids have so much to do here. Growing up all of my friends played sports, including me. You have a lot of outdoor activities and most kids take advantage of it. A lot of people commute to Reno for work, but theres also a lot of locals who have jobs in Truckee. Its a really close community, all the resturaunts are always doing fundraisers for kids benefits. The area is getting bigger and during holidays there are a lot of tourists which can get a little annoying. I used to work at a restraunt in Truckee and I know most resturaunts support local businesses by using local meat, ect.. All in all there is no where else I would rather be raised, Truckee is such a cool town.
