I know these things can be found in the state, especially the northern half. Except for number one. The cost of living here does not exist in cali. A basket of groceries completely filled to overflowing for 200? Doesn't happen in cali.
Right now we have a beautiful coating of glistening white snow/slush with ice underneath. I have taken soooo many people and got to watch snowflakes drift in the wind yesterday for the first time. Thats the other thing, here unless there is a really really really good reason in bad weather, people stay home. It can wait. I'm not sure you can find that in cali.

The cost of living here is higher because people actually want to live here. Why do you think New york, Hawaii, California, Japan, etc etc are expensive? Because so many people live there and want to live there. Imagine if you could get a 4 bedroom house in San Francisco or LA for 150 K. You can't. There is also not much land left to build on which drives up the cost.
I lived in New York, Snow is "cute" for the first year until you get tired of having to get up early to shovel it out of your driveway in order to move your car. No thanks.
Also like I said before. California has the weather of the rest of the country somewhere. It snows, It rains, it hails, it's hot it's dry, it can get humid not that humid like down south but it's been humid. The land changes, there's ocean, rivers, lakes, big cities, plains, flatlands, etc etc. Everything is already here.
Why are some of you so concerned about whether or not the grocery clerk is nice to you? Who cares???

Actually Texas is the number one destination for illegals now ... not Cali. As you may have heard ... there's no work here for them anymore.
And if you love snow, great. I personally would rather die than deal with snow again. Urgh ... it's absolutely horrible.

I'm not exactly a Conservative. I think people(media) make too much of red state/blue state. I think it is more localized than state to state and that has more of an effect on a person's day to day life. OK is as red as it gets, Tulsa not so much really at all.
I used to love Ca. until I got out on my own and started paying my own bills and started to plan to raise a family. I still think Ca. has alot to offer for a certain segment of the population, I try not to hate on Ca too much, but I love bagging on Santa Maria, that place is a dump.
There are craphole cities in every state, CA and OK, and especially Texas , definitely have their share.

Folks thanks for all the replies. One mans paradise is another's nightmare. My better half is pining for the "Pine Tree" state (trivia question). Seems every year it is harder for my family to stomach the "messes" of this state. Thanks again and if anyone knows about the above trivia and what that state has to offer, please give me feedback.

Spoken by someone who has lived in CA for too long and has obviously forgotten what it is like to live in an area where people are nice to each other, not just because it's the right thing to do in their job but because they are actually, you know, nice people who want to be friendly.
Sheeesh.....

I like California, if I ever moved I would probably go to the northeast or northwest. Portland, Seattle, Eugene, NYC, Boston, Philadelphia, New Hampshire. I love the cities back east, that is my main complaint of the west coast. I also love the northwest.
However, at this point in my life I am either moving to Oakland or Reno. I can't decide which.
The main thing I hate about California is the govt. I am a libertarian(very socially liberal), and California just doesn't fit that. However, I just love the bay area(SF, Oakland, Berkeley)
