Well, take LA for example, since CA is too large to generalize.

There's child abduction, sex offenses and other violent crime, traffic accidents (while pedestrian), poor health environment (air/water/superfund sites), drug and alcohol abuse, etc...

According to the Megan's law search of sex offenders in the city, there are 3322 offenders as compared to Austin's 500.

Sex Offender Registry - enter an address and view a map of registered sex offenders near you.

Plain and simple, it sucks. Once you have had years of total inconvenience due to weather the "beauty" of snowflakes turns into little nightmarish flakes of hell that add up to your car getting stuck and your electronics not working cuz it's too cold and your fingers and feet going numb unless you wear 4 layers. There is no quality of life when you can not simply go for a walk without your face freezing and/or slipping on ice and breaking your hip. These areas are cheap to live FOR A REASON. Maybe in CA you pay astronomical amounts to live. Maybe in CA you can't buy the things you want because it costs too much to live, but at least you can feel the sun and warm breeze across your body. To me, that's TOTAL freedom.
Like I said, I totally respect ones opinion, I just may not quite understand it. 3 more years of college and I'm outta this frozen tundra forever. Guaranteed.
I visited Kansas and it was a nice place but researched the weather and said no way. The four or so, maybe five inches we got of snow is about all you ever get here, and its occasional. The temperatures have run about 40/45 in the day and 25 to 35 overnight. We had a few days at 75.

I don't feel cabin fever. Inbetween storms its nice, even in winter. The fall was beautiful and warm. The spring is when I came out to visit a friend and see how I liked it and it too was beautiful. Summer is hot but then summer in inland socal on paved over desert is horrible. So hot is not an issue.

Everyone has something they want. I wanted quiet and out of the madening rush. I love that here. I would never encourage someone who wanted things to hurry along or wanted it to all look as spiffy as their neighborhood with the hoa to come here. I'm with all the natives here on that.

But if that is what you want, you'll pay through the nose in cali to find it and that is why those who do are leaving.
