"If the state is ordered to reduce the prison population, it would likely be able to do so over two or three years, so it would not have to release large numbers of inmates at once. Some methods of cutting the population include limiting new admissions, changing policies so parole violators return to prison less frequently, and giving prisoners more time off of their sentences for good behavior and rehabilitation efforts."

Judges back a one-third reduction in state prison population - Los Angeles Times

Given that much of the emphasis in releasing prisoners seems to be on prisoners with medical conditions which suggests a disproportionate number of elderly prisoners being released, I would hope that Charles Manson and Sirhan Sirhan aren't amongst the elderly criminals to be released. (Though if Manson was ever released from prison he'd almost certainly be murdered shortly after getting out.)

Don't make me laugh! Neither one of them will ever see the outside of prison walls, except perhaps from within a prisoner transport bus going to a different prison.

Considering that Sirhan killed the uncle of our state's First Lady, I would think that Arnold would do anything in his power to keep him behind bars. And for good reason.

As for Manson - if he ever was released, the chances of him being murdered himself would be extremely high. NOT that I'd feel sorry for him. If anything I'd feel he got what he deserved. At his age he'd probably be considered a low risk of committing more crimes - but considering what he did he deserves to be in prison forever. Then again other states have let out old people who did some very terrible things - Wisconsin paroled the serial killer Ed Gein (the inspiration for "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and the Buffalo Bill character in "Silence Of The Lambs") straight to a convalescent home. As horrible as Gein's crimes were, however, he didn't have the celebrity or media attention that Charlie got. I doubt there was anyone waiting for Gein to get out in order to kill him, while there would be for Charlie.

Gawd! Gein's crimes were far worse than Manson's although I don't know who racked up the highest body count.

Not certain why you think Manson would be murdered if released, but is your theory that there's lots of cold blooded killers who would kill Manson just so they could brag they did it? I'm just saying that because I don't believe that any of Manson's victims' families would make the leap of becoming murderers themselves.

There are certainly plenty of cold blooded killers who would kill Manson to brag about it (such as the many convicts who've tried to kill Manson in prison) but there are L.A. "urban legends" about people somehow connected to the victims waiting outside the gates if Charlie ever gets out in order to get the chance to kill him. Can't vouch for their veracity. I had friends who knew the Tate family and according to them Paul and Doris Tate would have easily made the leap of becoming murderers themselves to avenge the death of their daughter, if given the opportunity(They stated that Doris Tate once spoke before a victims' rights group and swore to personally kill Manson if he was ever released.) Both of Sharon's parents, however, are now dead, and never had the opportunity to make that leap before their own deaths. I highly doubt Roman Polanski would become a murderer himself to avenge Sharon's death considering Roman's difficulties with the CA justice system, but I really have no idea about the families of the other victims.

Thing is, there are TONS of people who are in jail who shouldn't be. People whose only crime was something really stupid, like alleged rape (with no proof), alleged child molestation (with no proof), possession with intent to sell (for a dime bag of something), assault (for a fight the other person started), domestic stuff (when the woman lied about being hit), and bounced checks. There are other stupid crimes that aren't worthy of jailtime, but you get my drift.

I've got no problem with releasing these folks, as long as there are clear instructions and penalties for committing another crime. And I don't mean a fine. Hell, I'd be a fan of exporting them to Mexico...see how long they last.

No kidding. The USA is the biggest jailer in the entire world. Yes bigger than China, India and Russia.
