Default Is Lancaster / Palmdale as horrible as they say??

Good'ay all - I have a question specifically for people in the Lancaster / Palmdale area of southern California. My husband may be relocating to an air force base close by and I was told to look for off base housing in Lancaster or Palmdale. Someone also recommended Rosamond or Tehachepi but I can't locate much info on the latter. Everything I have read about Lancaster and Palmdale has been BAD. Specifically section 8 etc.? Like this article: http://www.myavonline.com/blogs/Lanc...tion-8-BS.html Is it true that the area is so bad? Full of section 8? It's practically inconceivable that any area could be so bad and I hope it's not true because this is very depressing for us to have to think about living there if it's true. If anyone could enlighten me I would appreciate it! I am on the verge of begging my husband to turn down the job at this rate.

I haven't been there but know people who have lived there and they say it's BAD. All the hoodlums that were scared to stay in "Los Angeles" moved on up and out to Palmdale/Lancaster to continue their lifestyles.

Don't do it.

I'm sure there are some nice areas in that area but would bug me about it is he may have to head towards LA for his next job and that commute is pretty bad. Just something else to think about.

I've lived here for 20 years. You want to avoid housing on the east sides of either town (Lancaster or Palmdale). The farther west you go, the better off you are. Yes, there are lots of bad things going on, but the Cities are really working on it. If you have specific questions feel free to send me a message. Bottom line, in my opinion, NO it's not as bad as everyone on here says.

Tehachapi is in the Visalia/Tulare/Merced area. I have an uncle who lives there. I don't know what it's like to live there or how much crim is there, but I know it gets cold and foggy. Check your spelling, I think Tehachapi is spelled with an "a" rather than an "e". Try googling it with both spellings.

Thank you all. I am still researching. Read a few threads here and actually did find out I was spelling Tehachapi wrong! It's no wonder I couldn't find any info about it. Tehachapi seems the nicest of the places so far. Keep the input coming if you have any and thank you again to those who replied thus far.

Um... you do know that Tehachapi is WELL over 100 miles away from the places you listed, right?!?!?! Matter of fact it's over 200 miles from Merced. That's like telling someone that Tehachapi is near downtown LA! Well, actually downtown LA is closer at only 72 miles from Tehachapi. And it's even closer to Palm Springs than Merced!

Perhaps a visit to your Uncle is in order!

To the OP... If your husband is being offered a job at Edwards AFB, Tehachapi is a nice choice. The weather is nice and they get fog maybe 2 days out of the year and it lasts for like 15 whole minutes. You can check City-Data's info. for the weather and the likes. http://www.city-data.com/city/Tehachapi-California.html

Yeah, yeah, I don't know. I should just stick to my own area, huh! I've become like some of these idiots who post about an area they know nothing about. But hey - a least I didn't say what it was ike to live there!!!

I'm not very close with my family, so I haven't been to Tehachapi for years.

LOL... eh.. I rarely post in the California threads 'cuz there's so much of the "you can't live here unless both spouses are millionaires", blah, blah, blah. And those are posts usually made by people who made bad choices and are living the results of those choices.

I didn't post that to make you feel stupid or anything. Just thought the OP might not look into it if she thought it really was that far away from Edwards!

( To the OP... its actually only about a 40 mile commute with no traffic... unless you consider 8 other cars on Hwy. 58 "traffic".)
