Humboldt County Update - CR and crime
Following up on prior inquiries. The good news -College of the Redwoods has regained its accreditation and is good to go for at least three years. The bad news (responding to many prior inquiries on crime in Eureka, Arcata etc.)we've had a couple of bad murders here recently. Only a mile or so from me in Cutten, which used to be crime-free, we had a home invasion, apparently related to the marijuana trade, which left one man dead, and also in our part of town we are having dozens of daytime burglaries. I've never locked my doors before but now I have to. Plus this week in Eureka, a young father and veteran who took care of DD kids and was just about to finish his degree was stabbed to death in the parking lot of Rays supermarket, right by the Mall. Needless to say the whole town is upset. Posting this for those who may think that leaving the big,bad city is the answer to all problems. Rumor is that the perps of the stabbing were on meth. This IS still a good place to live, but keep your eyes open.

This scares me. I was just in Eureka for 4 months, even shopped at Ray's a couple of times. I knew there was a big drug problem in the area. Boyfriend and I had even considered making a move there permanent, but this makes me think twice about EVER moving there. And yes, I do realize that crime happens everywhere, but where I am from, you rarely if ever hear about this kind of thing happening. They need to crack down on the drug laws there, and imo, get rid of the 215 license to grow.

The crime that is happening is not from those with 215's. It is from those running grow houses with all rooms converted into grow rooms. This is not 100 plants that we are talking about, but 600 to 700 or more in one location. From what I read in the news, large scale grow houses are a problem all over, not just Humboldt county. I personally do not like Eureka, the Eureka police or the Humboldt county Sheriffs department. They have a good old boy mentality. I still feel safer here than I did when I lived in Berkeley or Oakland. Ferndale, Trinidad, Fortuna, McKinleyville and many of the smaller towns here in Humboldt county have a much lower crime rate than Eureka or Arcata.

We've tentative plans to stay at a motel by downtown Arcata for 3 nights this coming June. We usually got a motel in Fortuna, but got tired of going through Eureka both ways btw Fortuna and Arcata.
Should we stay in Arcata or can you suggest another motel? There;s a bus service btw McKinleyville and Arcata although I don't know much about it.

Well I hope you can break up the monotony of bad murders with a few good ones.
Good luck!

You would find better accommodations near the airport here in McKinleyville. The bus line is a bus that goes from Scotia in the south to Trinidad in the north, a good 35 to 40 miles apart. Many people bike between the towns and on 101. Arcata and Mckinleyville are very close to each other, the Mad River divides them.

Please don't say this; I have friends that, literally, I'm not being dramatic, are alive today because of this legislation. People who otherwise are not able to afford meds from the various clinics are able to grow their own at minimal cost, with no fear from state and local authorities.
The problem is stemming from the underground nature of the fact that cannabis is still illegal, thus profitable to would be drug dealers who grow thousands of plants. I have no problem with crack downs on dealers, but please, let's allow the small time growers to keep growing.

Lodgings
Without knowing whether you're looking for rock-bottom prices, let me make two suggestions. Arcata is okay but STAY AWAY from the motels in the Valley West area. Lots of crime. If you want a real experience for maybe $120 (you can bargain with them if they're not full) I would strongly recommend the Eagle House in Old Town Eureka. No website, no corporate feel, 16 rooms all with different decor. You won't regret it. In any event, enjoy your trip. .

Here's the deal. In about six months (give or take a few) I am moving back to my beloved California with my son, his wife and their new baby who will be born by that time. I now live on the outskirts of Nashville, Tennessee where there are rampant shootings and just in general very hard core violence here every single day.
I had hoped that Eureka would be our place to settle but now I'm not quite so sure. I definitely do want to get back to California where I belong. I have m.s. and here marijuana is so illegal it's not even funny. I don't find anything funny about Tennessee. Marijuana is the only thing that has ever helped me - I have given up the needles my neurologist wants me to take every other day and take countless medications. The fact that I can actually get a card to use it for medicinal purposes is beyond belief after being stuck in the Bible Belt for the past eight years. This is such a backward state I can't take it much longer without pulling my hair out.
Also, until we should have plenty of money saved up before our "big move" and we were wondering if there were any decent mobile home parks that were rentals, just until we all get settled and find something more permanent.
Does anyone have any opinion or pointers on Garberville? Less/more crime than Eureka? I have a very good friend who now lives in San Diego, (where I also grew up) but she once lived in Garberville and loved it. Any advice would be greatly appreciated and I thank you!
