What do you think of Lompoc California?
What do you think of Lompoc California? Is this more nothern Cali then Central?
Is it woodsy?
I have heard that it has a high crime rate. Is that true? Is there a better town near the AFB there that would be safer to live in?
I like what I see in regards to the climate there. It looks great.
Does anyone have any photos?

Sooo is that good or bad? I looked over some newspaper postings in Lompoc and the headline was about a gang member murdering someone there. Does this sort of thing happen a lot there?
I like small towns and my husband is with the DOD. If it is a small town atmosphere where people are people and though there is a little bit of misfits around, that it is only a little and nothing to really worry stronly over.

To be more precise, Lompoc is a bit of a dump, yet only a few miles east are some of the nicest places in the world to live.

Try not to live in Lompoc or Santa Maria. If you can, look in Solvang or Buelton instead.

Thank you for your responses. Is there anyone that could tell me of all the towns that are with in no more then 30 min. drive in radius around Vandenburg AFB?
Would Solvang or Buelton area be in that realm?
Are there any swimming beaches in the area or are they more the clamming type and sight seeing type?
My kids and I are very excited about a possiable move there. My husband may get a transfer there and we want to know as much as possiable about all of the towns that surround the base that are no more then 30 min. drive.. but preferably closer.

The beaches are for sightseeing. Very windy - dangerous surf (at SURF). The swimming beaches are south - Jalama, Gaviota, Refugio (very popular), El Capitan. Fishing is now permitted on the base property. Buellton is about 18 miles away. Nice homes in Vandenberg Village and Mesa Oaks. Surprised to hear that Lompoc is a dump. My relatives have live there for 30 years and never complained about anything, just warned me about the summer fog.

Well like stated before within a 30 min radius you have Buelton and Solvang in the Santa Ynez valley as well as Los Olivos. These places are fairly more expensive to live in and from there your about 30 minutes away from little beach spots off the 101 around Gaviota. But your fine with moving to Orcutt which would be the ideal place for a relocation to the base. It is a 20 minute drive back to the base from Orcutt, but, from Orcutt your only 30 minutes south of the really NICE beaches like Pismo, Shell, Avila...sunny days can easily be spent here and are not far at all from Orcutt. Orcutt is west of Santa Maria and though the city lines run right together, there is a slight stigma associated with Santa Maria vs. Orcutt and because of this homes tend to be cheaper there. There are also more run down older areas in santa Maria becasue it is of course somewhat historic. Be aware though that if you google Orcutt you will come up with most information about Santa Maria because Orcutt for the most part is not exactly on most maps if you know what I mean. Lompoc beaches are not that great, if you can avoid living there then do so. Sorry Lompocians, don't mean to offend anyone, strictly my opinion as well as many of those I've spoken with here in surrounding central coast cities. I'm convinced the central coast is the most beautiful area of CA (besides of course Carmel and La Jolla)...from Santa Barbara on up to Paso and and out to the coast is pure God's country and no one can tell me anything other...oh did I mention the insanely wonderful weather, green hills, cows, and vineyards that litter the area? If you decide to move to Santa Maria/Orcutt and are looking to buy, I'd like to send you some more info and take you around for the day to some great homes...Good Luck Rightpath, hope this helps!

I would second this from a shear preference standpoint. Buellton and Solvang are nicer towns, prettier, calmer, and would be my first choices over Lompoc or Santa Maria, if money were not an issue. You could probably live in Lompoc or Santa Maria without problems in spite of their reputations. To be sure, they're not as nice, but they are less expensive. You might also look into Orcutt.
The ocean north of Point Conception is colder and rougher than further south. The beach at Lompoc and Jalama are very nice sandy beaches, not rocky. Around 15-20 miles south of Lompoc, Gaviota, Refugio and El Capitan beaches are warm enough for swimming in summer.
