I've made some cuts... downgraded my satellite. If it wasn't for the fact the hills block my tv reception, I'd cut it out altogether. If I have to buy something new, I'm buying it out of state, through the internet. No more name brand anything. Cut my latte habit waaaayyyyy back, and buy a smaller size. Take lunch from home, no more going out. OUt for dinner only once a week. MOre thrift store shopping. I don't even buy dog food for the dogs. They're eating raw meat and bones diet, much cheaper for me. No frills for me or my home. Use the library, cancelled the Netflix.

And I don't buy a damn thing in LA county.

They won't be getting any extra taxes from me.
i dont understand how is buying raw meat and bones alot cheaper than buying some dog food? can you feed enough meat to the dogs without going broke? meat is expensive

I pay no more that .99 cents a pound for meat and bones. 3 small dogs - 15 oz fed a day. One dog HAS to have food with no enhancements, additives, etc. For that kind of kibble, I was paying $16.00 for a 5 lb bag, $8.00 a 5 lb. bag for the other 2 dogs. Since one has to have raw, I give them all raw. So, $24 every 2 weeks I was buying food, now, at roughly $1 a day, that's $14 for 2 weeks. Plus, more than %50 percent less poop that only has a slight hint of odor. One dog was in serious need of a dental cleaning... not anymore. That saved me $200 for cleaning. And the dog that needs the raw... much better health. No more meds or special shampoos for her skin. Saving me about $40 a month.

I also get quite a bit of food free. I use Craig's List and Freecyle for freezer burned meat that people will only throw out. I also get that from family, friends, and co-workers, too. Doesn't harm the dogs.

By going this route, I'm saving close to $80 a month. Just gotta be resourceful.

THRIFT TIP: This might seem like a crazy contribution to this conversation, but I started buying my dog's food at Costco. It is half the price of the one I have been buying for years and it is rated the best dog food with regards to nutrition it provides. If you don't have a membership, perhaps you can have a friend pick it up for you next time they shop there.

We are moving back to California in 17 days and these new taxes are ridiculous. I think that many people could cut back on their personal spending, but how are any of us going to afford to save money for our retirement? Ya know, because even though we've been paying into social security our whole working lives, we won't live to see a penny of it.

I love reading articles about how people don't save money anymore and that we are in for a rude awakening. My question to them is "what money"? You mean the part that is left after we pay all of our taxes? Oh yeah, I spent that on my mortgage that is eating me alive so that I can live in a tiny house on top of my neighbors that needs remodeling. If California weren't the gorgeous state that it is with the most unbeatable weather we would never consider coming back to this mess, but until we grow another California in this country, here we come for better or worse.

Aside from the money I save feeding raw, one of my dogs MUST have it, so therefore I feed the other 2 raw. In the long run, it'll save me a lot more in vet bills. Overall, raw is healthier than kibble, if fed properly.

Also, since I buy them "people meat", it's not taxed. And since one of the dogs is actually a foster dog, I can deduct 1/3 the cost of it. Another way to keep the state from getting more tax from me.
