Try Thousand Oaks in Ventura but close to the valley section of Los Angeles, housing is very expensive compare to Michigan and with other counties in california as Riverside, San bernardino or even areas of the Oc, but worth it to live a few miles away from Los Angeles, close to beaches such as Malibu, having a dinner in West Los in a conmuting time to TO, and theres a lot new developments there with no many dentists, I think is the best option.

Running from Gross Pointe because of black gangs? Why do Caucasians feel that they must run nowdays? Why should people be afraid to stay put in the greatest country in the world? What made Caucasians and Negroes of three generations ago stay put and not be fearful of gangs?
Americans of all colors should stop running from little black children with guns, get together with black adults and work something out-now.
All of this, where can we be safe attitude is appaling and cowardly.
I live in a mixed race area and no one is going to make me run, because all of the adults, black and white said "No More."

On one block you'll have bombed out abandoned houses and criminal thugs. The next block you'll have milf's walking their kids in 400$ strollers... We bought our house 3yrs ago for 479,000 and it just got appraised at 463,000. Yeah I'll bet all you CA people are laughing... Whatever we want out and want to live in a overall better environment(including weather). I've been all around the country and CA seems to offer the best looking geography and weather. Here are some of the places I'm looking at if anyone can chime in I'd appreciate it. I know they are in different places(north vs south) I would like to buy in an "upcoming" part of CA that still have potential to grow so I can be like the rest of the CA people making absurd amounts of profit on my house as opposed to losing on it. Yeah I'm bitter. You really have no idea how bitter either. I want to punch something/somebody. Ok I'll stop...

Livermore
Thousand Oaks
Folsom
Palm Springs
Rancho Cucamonga

We are going to plop down somewhere and start/takeover a Dental practice. So I would even be open to moving somewhere more rural as long as it has nice weather, possibility for growth(doesn't everywhere in CA?) and a nice looking geography(anywhere should be better then Detroit).
Trust me, know one in California is laughing at your situation..or the entire situation in Detroit. Prices have fallen here in California ( I'm in San Diego), and it looks like they might continue to fall for a while anyway. I don't think too many californians are making absurd amounts off of their property now. I know what I'm talking about because my house is on the market right now. Have you ever heard that song by Sam Cooke, " A change is gonna come"? Well it has came.

Yeah, we're leaning toward Thousand Oaks and Temecula... We have friends in West Hills.

Thanks again everyone for your positive comments. I do really appreciate it.

Actually I don't think there are any gang issues in Detroit. It's just mass crime and blight. No one in Detroit is that motivated to "make" a gang. Either way I don't have time to wait for Detroit to "bounce back". Like I said I'm a human not a Vampire and only probably have about 20yrs of a solid life left... I mean I could waste the rest of it sitting here hoping and fighting but I'm not gonna. I mean I at least don't have to. If I had to it'd be a different story.

Have you ever been to Detroit? It's not like any other city you know.

I second the Temecula recommendation - it's a bedroom community/commuter alley with lots of newly-developed houses. Since the residential boom has been going on, the commercial side has to catch up now - services have to move in to serve the new residents. Like a dental practice! I looked at land to buy there a couple years ago. It's congested and dense near the freeway but more rural as you go east. It's bound on the sides by mountains and on the south by Indian reservations, so there IS some limit to the growth.

I believe the next couple years will be a good time to buy as well.

I'm not familiar with Livermore or Folsom. Thousand Oaks is nice but may be expensive for you. Palm Springs is just too darn hot, IMO.

I have been to Hilo before and I can tell you that that precipitation graph is no lie. It rains pretty much every day. I can tell you however, that the rain is gennerally not depressing like Seattle. The rain is generally more of a refreshing passing sun shower with full sunshine following minutes after.
