It's probably actually nearly twice that amount if you take into account the many out of work who are not receiving unemployment benefits.

As people run out of money they get more desperate. So crime rates will start spiking.
The next big hit will HAVE to be Entitlements: Welfare, Social Security, Medicare, MediCal, Government Jobs....

This increase doesn't surprise me at all; California's unemployment rate in December was 9.9%. An uptick of .2% was to be expected (but not welcomed!). I hope things will get better soon, but I'm not holding my breath.

Guess the smart ones will hunker down, get the gardens going, plant no mowing grasses and power down their homes. Looks like we're in for a long one. At least the weather is nice.

That was the LA county number in December not California.
The revised December number for California was 8.7%, so we had an uptick of 1.4.

Oh, whoops! Well, still... I expect the unemployment numbers to go up for a least a few more months. Thank you for correcting me!

The January numbers are now out by county. They range from 6.6% in Marin County up to 26.7% in Colusa County in Northern California.

I'd recommend people also look at it by individual cities and towns, not just the county level, at this link which uses an Excel format.

We have counties in California larger than some states plus unemployment can be localized.
For example, Kern County had a 13.8% rate. But it included rates like 7.9% in Ridgecrest and 9.7% in Bakersfield up to 34% in Delano and Arvin.

Thanks for that spreadsheet. Some places aren't as bad as I thought, others worse.
