Capt. Dan you better watch what you say, remember you live in "WHITE"ville ,TN some of those sensitive people of color may deem you as being bigoted!HA! HA!HA!
I really like these people refer to sensitivity and cultural awareness, are they trying to say if we stereotype a black person we "WHITEY" has to go to some sort of re-education camp?
Sounds to me like what the North Vietnameese did to the citizens of South Vietnam in the 1970"s,it's called BRAINWASHING PEOPLES MINDS!!!!!

You are right I don't know how to type but I never was a secretary, so am I excused? That's okay if you think its gibberish because everyone's entitled to their free thinking, am I right?
I personally don't give a damn about this cultural awareness and sensitivity training! You need to stop crying like a baby and get your momma to change your diaper, City Boy!!!
So the mayor sends an e-mail of a watermelon, what's the harm done?
Were your feelings hurt city boyeee? My God when a watermelon cartoon causes a mayor to resign his position it has become a sad day in this nation.
I think we are becoming a nation of wimps and cry babies and I will really don't want to see what this country will be like in another 20 years!!!

You're an idiot, every time you type you continue to prove it. Continue on, it's amusing. Better yet tell some watermelon jokes next time you're actually around some Blacks. You wont because you know it's wrong and you're a coward. Whats next Holocaust jokes. Hilarious.

starsandbars, you might think that blacks are over reacting but when was the last time some one made you feel uncomfortable about your skin? Or threatened to lynch you? Or told you couldn't shop in a store and or couldn't use a bathroom because of the color of your skin? When was the last time you were followed around in a store? Black people take this kinda stuff seriously because of personal experiences. There is no crying involved you actually have to be pretty toughed skined to be black and often have to take in derogatory comments.

bayarea-girl, I don't think we share political views but I always enjoy reading your responses and I respect what you have to say. I would have to say, I do think this PC thing has been carried a little too far. As I mentioned way back in the this thread, we heard some pretty awfull Reagan jokes, but most took them in stride. I understand the mayor resigning, especially if, by any chance he sent the cartoon on while at work, but I don't think the joke was all that horrible...He was in a position where he needed to be extra careful, for that reason he needed to resign or certainly apologize up one side and down the other. But to make quite such a big deal out of this is going overboard in my view anyway. This is only my opinion I would add. You have no idea the jokes that went around when Clinton was President, not racial jokes but many about Ar, about him and Hillary and even about Chelsea. They were worse than the watermellow joke I can guarantee you. This is part of life...

nmnita, trust me I make fun of everybody and my friends do to as well and I have a mixture of friends. But there is a time a place for everything. I am not overly sensitive and jokes about Clinton and Hillary are a bit different than racial undertone jokes. The Mayor had to have quit for additional reasons he didn't want to surface, there could have been other racial indirect and direct jokes that others took offense to.
It is just a fact that whites, blacks, hispanics, asians, or whatever I left out take jokes in a whole different way. Sometimes the same and some times just in a different direction. If you and a friend were joking around and the friend later said your joke wasn't funny and you hurt their feelings, you would at least be sensitive and know that until they get your wit or acknowledge that he/she won't you then become sensitive to their needs as a friend. It doesn't matter how much you want them to take it in a different way, if they don't think it is funny what is the point (there can be several reasons you personally have nothing to do with as to why a friend might have an issue with your joke)? That is all we are saying.
Also, I love reading and respect your comments too.

If he did more than just pass the cartoon or joke on, that is a different story altogether, but I think you do understand what I am saying. We are way to worried about what others might think and we are becoming to sensitive in todays world..
Yes, race or religious jokes can be offending, but our son in law is Jewish and the cutest Jewish jokes I have ever heard came from him and from another Jewish friend. I know it is different when we tell them on ourselves.
and it ok for us to disagree on this. I love honest debates, what I hate are people that are so one sided that there is no room for intelligent conversation, or the posts are almost impossible to beleive..I have seen two or three of those this week. Either the OP makes no sense or they keep changing the story to fit what they would like us to believe. Well, at least it keeps things interesting...LOL

He knew; how could anyone in America not know the stereo type about black people and watermelon? He was making a veiled appeal to racism as the GOP usually does.
